I have the standard NTO5's and love them! It's the first tire to run on my roadster, so I have no comparison...but have had no issues and they handle very well.
94 Mustang GT donor "budget build", Stock EFI, 5.0 bored .030 over, minor head work, ground stock cam, AODE, 8.8 rear, 4.10 gears, 4 into 4 bbk's, 30# injectors, 76 mm BBK mass air meter, 75 mm BBK throttle body, dual chrome roll bars, chrome FR500's 17x9 front and 17x10.5 rear, Nitto NT05 255/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear, licensed and legal!
I got them on. The rubber is very soft to the touch, even softer than my last set of Mickey Thompson's.
I had to put a few miles on them for the rubber to lay even on the road. The first few burnouts on the street showed the outer edges of the inside patch.
After playing with the pressure, I've got them at 23 psi and they seem to like that and stick like the Mickey Thompsons on the street. We'll see how they work on the 1/4 May 7th.
I keep forgetting to take pictures. They do look good though : )
My car is in paint right now, but NT05s for the front and NT05Rs for the rears is my first planned upgrade when I get it back on the road. Should be a big improvement from my Suckitomos.
I was wavering between the NT05Rs and MT ET Streets. Sounds like I'll go with the NT05Rs for sure. I look forward to see if you improve your 1/4 times.
Is it the 7th yet? I want to know how these work for you in comparison to the MT's. I am going to buy one or the other and this will be the first head to head matchup I have seen.

Hey Tom, in looking at that 2nd picture it looks like the edge of the contact patch is very wavy, is that an optical illusion? Very curious to hear how these hook on the track and would like to know how they handle as well. Cheers.
Thomas
That is correct, you are not seeing things! If you look close, there's actually a pattern to it. I wondered about it myself.
Guys at the track say these tires work best around 20 psi at the track. It's going to feel strange trying them that high, I'm used to running M/T's at 11-12.
Congrats Tom, that run was awesome. You cut a near perfect light, great 60 ft, and your time and mph stayed within the NHRA limits by the slimmest margin possible. It doesn't get any better than that without getting kicked off the track.
Couple questions for you. Do you feel those Nittos hook just as well as the MT's? How is the handling compared to the MT's? Are they speed rated like the Nitto 555r's and what's the difference between these and the 555r's? I had trouble with the 555r's spinning on the freeway. Cheers.
Thomas
I have the NT05R's on my turbocharged 5.0 mustang and love them. Regular radial tires were useless and would break free on hard acceleration at 50mph. The Nittos are great on high horsepower cars that don't see a lot of miles, and the sidewalls are strong enabling good handling as well.
Honestly with the HP to weight these cars are running, the unlikely chance of driving in rain, I think Drag Radials's are a great choice and all I will be running.

I can honestly say that they hooked just as well and the M/T's. I had my doubts but my 60 ft was actually improved over the M/T's (slightly). Being able to run more PSI than the M/T's adds some stability, plus the ride home was much better.
I don't know about the speed rating or the handling. The back feels secure to me and sticks like glue, especially after adding the anti roll bar in the rear. Front tires are cheap and hard so the front always slided first in a turn.
These tires are no comparison to the 555r's. I've had several sets of those tires. They last long and are much better than a regular street tire but think of the NT05R's like a M/T but with more tire pressure. They are very soft to the touch. I'm curious to see how quickly they'll wear compared to the M/T's.

I have these on my hot rod but have not hit the street. I can tell they are very soft because they pick up everything when i move the car around. I got these tires on sure luck as they were the only ones available in the size I wanted. Sounds like I got some good ones
OK, it stopped raining temporarily so I think I am headed to the track tomorrow to see what I can do. I plan to set the tires at 20 psi, skip the waterbox and do a short burnout to clean the tires off.
Any other tips?

Yes, the rear anti roll bar REALLY changed the feel of the car for me too. Hooks very well and stays straight, no lean whatsoever. Crazy difference on a turn too.
I can hit second gear with my foot on the floor, the back squats a bit and the tires dead hook. I was playing with a motorcycle the other day (closed course), we were dead even in first gear, I saw his front end start lifting just slightly so I know he was pulling hard, then I hit second and he dissappeared from sight!

Has anybody documented their anti roll bar installation? I am convinced that is my next project but I can't really envision how this thing goes in. Which of the three models did you guys use?

I don't have any pictures of the install but I took 1/2 inch thick steel triangle plate and welded it to the side of my frame then welded the bushings to a hole cut in the middle of the plate steel.
I put on some Nitto NT05R's 275/17's and feel they handle better than my MT ET street radials did on some hard cornering. They must have stiffer sidewalls. I took my car to the strip tonight and on my first pass I did a 1.6 60 ft leaving very easy off the line. I'm sure I could have cut some 1.5's but I found out my headlights weren't working. I had to head straight home after just one pass as it was getting dark. In my opinion they hook as well as the MT's, at least on my car. Cheers.
