Hi out there fellow tax payers...
I'm picking up my roadster kit this Friday.
What can I expect to pay at the border?
I know I have to insist that this is not a complete but only a "starter" kit: just a bunch of auto parts! But what is the expected tarriffs or taxes I'll have to pay?
My fellow Ontarians indicate it has been HST for them (13%), but in Quebec we're still under the GST formula (5%).
Any input by tomorrow would be appreciated!

From what I understand, you will definately pay 5% GST. If you are using a border crossing in Quebec, there is a good chance that they may also collect the 8.5% QST.
In my case they collect the HST for NS when I crossed the border in NB.

I'm pretty sure you'll pay GST and PST on the kit, whether the PST is collected at the border or when you register the car in Quebec.
But I sure hope you've already secured Transport Canada's written approval, otherwise you could have problems with the CBSA. Your "insistence" may not count for much without the TC authorization letter.
Parts its the way to go at the border. Your importation letter comfirm this is not à car, its à bunch of car parts that eventually Will constituée à car with more parts bought localy in Canada.
Cheers

If you have the TC letter then just let them read it. Within it already states that it is a collection of "Auto Parts". No further need to defend from there. It was that simple with mine. In the end they didn't even want to look in the truck

Congrats Wormie! Makes two of us at the exact same stage. Now enjoy the unpacking - it's like an extended X-mas morning... "look honey! the steering wheel!...":
Euh... I've got to go easy on the "look honey this and that" just so to keep everyone in a good mood :-P.
Beware the pictures, my trailer looked a little scary... Even the US border guys made fun of it, but I got their attention when they realized what we were after! "why go to Boston for car parts?" they asked... Ah!
There were 6 pick ups at FFR btw yesterday and today: all with these huge car haulers! We looked a bit amateurish with our skidoo trailer! But it worked like a charm, easy on gas and the van tranny.
Got arrested on the way back in upper NY, 20 mins from the border for slowing instead of stopping at a stop sign!?!? "Interestimg car parts" said Smokey after looking at the trailer. Me to reply "Building a Cobra, been on the road for 10 hours from Boston" and we got away with a warning and best of luck wishes for the build!!!
Won't tell you about getting lost in Burlington, the stupid hotel attendant we woke up at 1AM and who fell on his face climbing over the front desk, loosing my wallet (in my luggage), stuck in traffic in Boston for 40 minutes, but you get the picture by now!!!
Went through Cornwall. But yes I did learn road etiquette in Mtl (jay walking, passing on the right, 2nd gear stops,....) None of that in the plans for the Cobra.X(
Perhaps the tropper thought I'd done my share to help the American Economy! (Which I sure did!)
