travel suggestions from Oregon guys???

I will be coming down agan this year to the Vancouver picnic-but instead of fighting the sunday traffic north on I-5 like I did last year I'm heading to the Oregon coast for a one or two night stay-then taking the coast north to home. Any suggestions on some good roads for snake travel? thanks in advance

Bob:
For what it's worth you could try coming south across the Columbia on I5 and pick up Rt 30 along the south shore of the river to Scapoose. From there pick up the Scapoose/Vernonia highway through Vernonia and then pick up Rt 26 to 101 and Seaside. About 110 miles or 2-3 hours drive. Stay over at the Shilo Inn in Seaside on Broadway St. (they have covered parking). Pretty good restaurant right in the hotel.
Next day would be 101 up through Astoria and follow it up to just south of Aberdeen and pick up Rt 107 East to Rt 12 East. In Elma change from Rt 12 to Rt 8 East into Olympia then back up I5. About 130 mi.

What Don C. said. Oregon Coast hwy 101 can be very slow this time of yr. & not many "passing lanes" . Another twistie/fun route is to come out on hwy 26 from Vernonia, go west & hit hwy 53 turn south and that comes in the back way to coast hwy 101 than back north towards Seaside?

Another option would be to turn right instead of left when the Scapoose/Vernonia Highway intersects with Rt47 and take 47/202 up through the coast range into Astoria from the south and then pick up Bus 101/Lewis and Clark Road and follow it down to come into Seaside from the east.
Bob. I can map it for you if you'd like.

Don-a map would be great (I have a 'history' of making wrong turns) I got a Rand McNally map book too! sounds like you all know some great roads-last years drive up I-5 sucked-we had 4 snakes in stop and go on I-5 and my clutch was feeling weird-then I get home and found the cable frayed (only 3 wire strands still attached) this year I'm avoiding the freeway on a sunday (and went hydraulic clutch) the coast drive north probably has lots of rv'ers like Hywy 101 by my house so I will be looking for interesting side roads.
