Picked up my car today from Blood Enterprises to the tune of $2022.60. Needless to say I was pissed at the cost. I just want everyone to be aware of how expensive they are. I never asked them how much but was warned by others that they will say $500 but it will run you a grand for a dyno tune. I did hear him quote five to six hundred to tune a 5.0.
So, when I get it back its got this knock that gets a little quieter when it warms up but never goes away. They think it's a wrist pin.
I had the machine work done by Cope Brothers who has a great reputation. Actually, they did more than the machine work, they handed me an assembled short block. The motor was then assembled the rest of the way by me, topped with a Kenne Bell blower. Special thanks again to Carman for the bracket he fabbed.
Bottom line is, no way I'm getting it fixed in time for the Lemay event. I've already bought my $35 ticket if someone else wants to go. For free.
With regrets
Bob
I did e-mail James460 direct so he already knows

That sucks Bob - they probably ran it pretty hard on the dyno. Try pulling the sparkplug wires one at a time, and see if the noise goes away - it may well be a header gasket - I've had one of those, and it sounds really bad - sounds like a knock. Before you start tearing into it would be worth checking. Sorry you can't make it - I was looking forward to catching up.

The guys at blood are the nicest guys in the buisness but they will take all your money. There are other shops doing just as good of a job for less money. Just my two cents. MadDog

Thanks for the words guys. I may just show up in my DD and check out the event. Good idea on the spark plug wire pulling Howard, I'll do that Monday as my car's at work.
On a side note, my car got to 415 HP at the wheels. Runs great, makes great torque. Idle sounds bad ass. Doesn't smoke at all. Just this knock though.....

Mad Dog....Who else does dyno tuning on cars with EFI?
As a follow up...motors coming out tomorrow. Turns out the noise is either a wrist pin or a piston.
My ticket goes in the mail tomorrow to Joe Caropepe...Have fun guys!!
Regrets

That sucks Bob - FWIW I don't know of any EFI tuners that I would trust in this area. I think the one Mad Dog is referring to is probably The Mustang Shop in the Renton area. They bought a dyno that was operated by John (forgot his last name) running his business out of his home call The Horse Power Ranch. He was the one dude that could tune a car around here without it costing an arm and a leg, and without wrecking your engine for you either. He just upped and quit and sold the dyno to The Mustang Shop. I've had work done at the TMS, and the car ended up worse than they started - as I their parking lot, the car was puking coolant all over the road - I had to do a U turn and go right back. In all fairness, it was probably a setup they weren't familiar with - I don't know their experience with forced induction though.
Hope you get it back on the road quickly. Summer's just around the corner. BTW, I have an empty seat for the Lemay show if you want to ride shotgun?

That's a great idea and I'm going to take you up on it! So where do we meet? At the motel with the rest of the guys? Call me or PM me, I'm on. Thanks. I think you still have my cell?
On the tuning deal...I had talked to the guy at the HP Ranch and was going to use him but you know the story. The guys at Blood knew him and were glad he was gone as their business had doubled. Pricks.
At any rate, get ahold of me, thanks for the offer.
Cheers
Bob

Bob - I was planning on driving down in the morning - where and when were folks planning on meeting up? Maybe I can just meet you somewhere on my way down?

Most of the OR guys and a lot of us Seattle guys are meeting at their hotel, the Shilo Inn (Google Maps) - we're leaving at 8:30.
Don't know about breakfast...
I think Mike (Mad Dog) might be going straight to the museum, then again, he might be talked into meeting at the Shilo.

I'm planning on meeting at the Shilo Inn as well. If we meet for breakfast there is an IHOP and an Elmer's less than a block away on the same street as the motel (Hosmer). Maybe we could all meet earlier than 0830 at one of these restaurants for breakfast.
Bob.....Really sorry to hear about your motor and the less than pleasant results from the dyno guys....It's an unfortunate truth around the forum that, when it comes to dyno tuning your car, the operant words should be "Proceed with Caution"......Far too many posts here about big buck dyno costs, expecially when tuning an EFI-system, and the horror stories of cars being run incessently until the point of overheating, puking water/oil, and/or just blowing up.....I, for one, believe dynos are very hard on the equipment. With the help of good folks like John Card, I've empowered myself with the basic knowledge of what I need in the tune, and then I only have the dyno guys make the pull at the rate and top RPM that I've determined. I'm connected, and use the computer to make the adjustments.
Like most folks here I suspect, I spend so much time and care designing my motor (or at least mapping my HP/TQ/fuel, oiling system, etc.), that I'll be darned if those guys are getting their hands on my motor.
Karen
PS...and BTW, I didn't let the nurses take my new baby girl out of the room for the entire time I was in the hospital either....Probably just a tad controlling

We are having breakfast Sat. morning at Elmer's (it is 1/4 mile from shilo inn on way to Le May (meeting at 7 am)
Regarding the weather...the Wash. guys are stressing about the "sunny" tacoma weather. The Oregon guys are coming up no matter what..although we may be in temp. controlled rides if the sun decides to come down in liquid form.

Bob, Thats a lot of beer $$$$$$$$. Lets hope its worth it.
I still need to get the bugs worked out of my 408. I was all set many moons ago to take it out to Hobart and the tuner left the State. I ran into a Mustang guy and chatted him up at the gas pump yesterday and he said he had Brad's Custom Auto tune his FI stroked 302 and was pleased with the end result. I think he said it dyno'd out around 400 HP and some change.
Anybody have expirence with Brad's? I guess he specialize's in working on Corvette's and Mustang's. I really need to get off my duff and get this car on the road. God its only bin 9 years. Thanks! Steve

I don't think Brad's Custom Auto has a dyno in their shop - he used to use John at HPRanch - I remember going out there with my foxbody and meeting him and Dane - this was quite a few years ago. I'm thinking they may have The Mustang Shop do their dyno stuff for them - not sure on that though.

Bob,
Like most the guys here on the forum we all feel your pain because each and every one of us have been hosed more times than we admit building cars. in fact where this coupe is concered it has happen so many times I don't even notice any more. Kind of like taxes or politics but no sense in going there. It has been quite some time since your fly by over in West Seattle and I can see that I am just going to have to open up the wallet and pay someone to get this engine tuned up. Saying that I just need to find a darn tunnel so the light can start shining through. I should ping Neal I bet he knows who has a dino and some Ford tuning skill. I look forward to hooking up and sharing a few beverages with you this year for sure. Steve
There is a guy in Enumclaw who has a dyno but hasn't got the programming to do Fords yet. He came highly recommended to me and I spent much time on the phone with him and when he said he didn't have the programming for Ford I said, "Well hell, how much is it?" thinking I'd kick in a hundred or so to help and he said it was thousands, not hundreds. The place is Eric's Automotive...and yes, his name is Eric.
Like many of us business people, he is watching his expenses closer than ever before so the outlay of cash is not an option at this time. I wish there was a way for him to realise how quickly it would pay for itself. Perhaps if enough of us would just call the guy to tell him his services would be valued? Probably wishful thinking on my part but when I do need some help I'm going try him again.
His number is 360-761-4418
Thanks
Bob

Thanks Bob,
I will give Eric a ring and let him know there is another needy soul interested in some tuning skill. Besides the coupe I still need to sort out my 56 F-100 that has an 89' Mustang GT FI 302 in it that feels like about 75%. Must be that C-4 thats not carrying its weight. Steve
