Car is running again...

Fired her up for the first time since getting back from California. A little twist of the dizzy and she fired up and settled into a smooth idle. All in all pretty drama free. Took it for a spin around the neighborhood for about a mile, then let her idle until the fan finally kicked on, and then shut her down for the night.

So far so good! It was good to hear her fire up again. Even better that it was drama free - hopefully it will stay that way.

My son took a video, so I'll see if I can post it up.

Nice job Howard! I may have missed the posts, but what did you do?

I'm assuming the right heads, yes? Anything else?

Darren, you about got the dizzy gear bit figured out? Watching the thread in the main forum--that generated some traffic.

H,
What did you put on top of that monster? Carb, EFI (which EFI)?

Just in time for the winter cold and rain

Gale, I switched out the heads to 72cc heads, and put in new pistons (Mahle).

Arch - what can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment. If I can't get it to work this time, I may just sell the car! I'm starting to eye 911 turbos!

Congrats Howard. Did you swap out the computer and retune it too? 911 turbo? Now you're speaking my language.

Yeah, ordered a custom cam from Ed and am considering a bronze gear to start. He said steel should be ok but I'd prefer to find I still have a problem witha bronze gear rather than steel If all goes well with the bronze gear I may just leave it.

I ended up leaving the computer - probably will have Wayne come out and tune it in December.

Really starting to like the 1997 911 turbos - last of the aircooled 911s, best body style, all wheel drive and just an awesome car all around. Also has a roof, a/c etc Only way I can get one is to sell the cobra - haven't got to that point yet, but starting to think about it.

I had a 911sc, worst handling car I've ever owned, don't even think about power shifting it. had to drive it like it was a female or it was all over the road. car was new. noisy to boot...just saying...

Glad to hear you're back up and running. Hope you can get those stacks running right with Waynes help. Doesn't seem right that you should have to fly in someone to tune that system. Hoping my set up will be easier to get right. What kind of electronics did you get with yours?

Bob

Keep the roadster AND get the 911!!

Hey Bob - did you take your car to Blood yet? I'm wondering how that turned out?

Let me know if you come across any 1997 911 turbos!

Didn't make it for my appointment as it was raining cats and dogs (little vet humor) and haven't re-scheduled. My car has only 50 miles since we seen each other at Dougs. It's under wraps with a trickle charger attached. Next spring I suppose.

Cheers

Bob

Hope the new location is working well for you and you're not killing yourself with the commute.

Okay - I'm all set to have Wayne come out - he's flying in on Monday December 12th around noon, and we'll see if we can do some driving around in the rain or snow and do some tuning! A dyno appointment has been set up at Carb Conn on Tuesday morning, and I'm hoping to borrow Arch's trailer if the weather is crappy. He's flying out on Wednesday around lunch time.
Y'all are welcome to join us for dinner on Monday or Tuesday evening and drop in during dyno tuning to say hi.

What times Monday/Tuesday? I am on day shift so I might be able to make it and meet Wayne.

The dyno is scheduled for 10am on Tuesday.

Don't really have any specific plans for Monday or Tuesday night - probably go out to a restaurant somewhere.

I'd be interested in wandering over to the dyno since its about 300 yards from where I'm sitting right now. If you need, you could probably stick your car in my shop before or after the dyno if you need to (can't guarantee I won't drive it now that I'm cobraless). Been a while since I've seen Wayne also.

BTW, I have your butt pad in my car. Let me know if you want it now or I can give it to you at the dyno.

250 miles on mine now..running better and better

Hey Howard,

I guess you could bring the Porsche on the Summer Trip and be comfortable with the air going and a nice stereo.....Oh I did that last year in the M3 and it was pretty nice too, just a different experience.
There is something about the 911s for sure....the latest GT3s are just amazing cars, all the bad habits tuned out of the suspension. I would be tempted to have one, but it would have to be 2008 or later GT3...otherwise I will just keep my M3 for the track. I have driven a friends 2008 GT3 at Laguna and it was FAST and alot of fun to drive, really feels like being in a real race car.
Just did another Thunderhill day on Monday, the M3 was amazing with new lowering springs (2x stiffer spring rate), AST shocks, fresh alignment and corner weighting....passed at least 2 911 Carrera 2S's and one older Turbo, probably a 1997ish vintage in Black. May be time to put a Turbo on the M3 so the ZR1s can't run away on the straights. Pics:
http://www.gotbluemilk.com/web111114b/717/index.html
Gromm engine gets better and better as it breaks in, haven't had it over 4000 rpm yet but it feels like it is going to pull real strong. Have to tweak the carb back to original jets and change the advance stop on the MSD next, getting up to 40 degrees total with 15 initial. People just love these cars, honks, waves, thumbs up.....don't think I'll ever sell it.

Goes in for professional race alignment Nov 27th and corner weighting, maybe first track day on December 10th if I can get over 1000 miles on it by then...if the rain stays away!

Glad to hear your running again, hope you get some winter driving days in!

Dave
