Leo, as you can tell if you looked at the web site, I took you advice on getting from Montauk to Akers. You were correct there is a stretch by the old Baptist camp that is still gravel. Has to do with a tree hugger group. We will climb back up the hill to 119 then take E over to K and follow it to Akers Ferry. This keeps everything paved and still keeps us in the pretty landscape for the entire day.

don't those tree huggers know that dust from road lime gives trees lime disease
yep i zoomed in on the road and it looked to be still gravel but a short distance.
glad to see you are coming to Montauk first i may just fish in the AM and then join the trip from there its sweet country and i like to keep it a secretshould remind people though that "the hills have eyes" so don't piss off the locals

Sounds like a plan to me. We should be in Montauk around 9:30 or a few minutes later. As I grew up in the area, I know that the trees have eyes and a big 10-4 on don't piss off the locals.
i just spent the last few days nursing a major cold and sunday last i heard a valve train noise...bummmer went thru the adjustment and i think i may of got it, last May i squashed a lifter, and i am praying that it is not another..#@% issue. just buttoned her up, we will see tomorrow after work i will give "Buffy a ride"
should of went solid lifter like i planned, these HFT aren't the way they used to be made. oh well hope the weather is great for all even if my dumba$$ don't make it

this may help
Where can I park my car overnight?Local Salem organizations have graciously offered indoor parking on and around the center of town. There are two locations for parking; Heavin Motors and Knight Auto Care. You will recieve a garage assignment when you arrive in Salem on Friday. The list of available indoor parking spots is limited. Priority will be given to registered open toped cars, then first come first served, based on registration date. If you need a place to park, please register and note it in the registration. August 31st, we will email you and let you know if we have an indoor spot for you.

The indoor parking facilities are no more than 2 blocks from the Holiday Inn Express. Both of the same facilities can also accept trailers if you had planned to park your car in the trailer. That way everyone is parked overnight within walking distance of the hotel.

Um, yes! And by all means do NOT stop under an overpass, you will get soaked. Last forecast i saw this morning said it should blow through by noon friday. I am trying to decide on driving or trailering....what time are getting there Leo? We are meeting at 109 & 44 QT at 2ish.
i am watching the weather
i took off for friday, thursday is an inspection day, it all worked out elevator inspections about done, tomorrow i have to stAY LATE, we are doing a fire alarm, fire proofing of hoistway by A/E and drop test for a final, 500ft a minute, i tip my hat to the mechanic on this install, Dennis got the main rails smooth as a baby's behind.
as far as time frame leaving Tim, i am not trailering so just so long as my fishing pole doesn't get toooo wet, and the clouds are in our favor i would say around noon or one my cabin at montauk is all set up, kitchen, coffee pot and a bed.
where your meeting is kind of funny thats where we (my brothers) meet in January for our winter float, break fast in Rolla, and put in somewhere on the Current for 3 days of freeze and relaxation
there is a spot at Akers if i don't hook up, when you come down the big hill to K the store is right in front of you just to the right goes to river access, theres' some sh!t houses and the gravel bar is right there a great back drop for pics.
if you go down to the ferry the road is too rough to get to the river, the only other place with a river back drop would be round springs thru the campground at the lower put out below the bridge, above it along the river is like a boat ramp, not Cobra friendly.
and Alley springs hope the weather goes south because it is a place that can have its own micro-climate, meaning rain out of the blue. but what would this trip be like if it wasn't freakin fun.
Leo loves an adventure
BE SAFE and happy Trails

thanks for hosting us "wet and rained on people" Salem Mo
SATurday: wife and I left montauk about 10:30 got up to E and the wife made me pull the reins back....Rain and more rain started again, we watched from our cabin at Montauk springs and ended up running out of phone data for the radar watching we did.
well there was a spot in the weather that was clear about 3pm to 5pm so we went for itcruised up 119 to E then on to K started a bit of a sprinkle abd the raods still wet dodging the puddles on highway K, got along the river at its high side well you would know the spot river on the right and about 300 ft down it seemed like we were above the alpine at that point the way the fog was, we decended down to Akers at K and KK were i took the gravel road to the river, wife and i took some pics and i did a video, the river back drop is different from what i normally see in the winter...opps the bluff is green with trees and shrubs, but still as wonderful, but better in the DRY
headed up KK to 19 and then the rain started even more.....left turn or right turn...i opt for the left sorry but back to Salem 20 plus miles, spun past the hotel where some were staying that nice blue slabside with the rag top in the parking lot was there and another the color was hard to tell but dark color, had a nice cover over the windscreen and cockpit where the hell did you get that I LIke it,
buzzed over to the corner gas station and filled her up, the wife shopping inside seemed forever..........pulled out to hit 32 onto 119 to montauk again, damn its really coming down now no wipers, no top and 2 wet people for 20 miles more
got back to the cabin safe and wet, ate our lunch for dinner, sorry could not make the brickhouse rest. i had wet clothes
really was looking forward to cruising with everyone, too bad the weathermen can't do weather reports.
well i tried to upload my pics, maybe i will send them off to someone to download for me.........the camera must be still WET
for those of you i met nice talking to you and maybe once again, and sitting back thinking i am glad that the winners MCC gave all the proceeds to the Salem Band "Kootos" and OHRAH for you i would of done the same, but someone got my bucket when i came back from getting my food it was gone hopefully to the right people, so i just stuck some more cash in the cheerleaders bucket that was collecting for the band.
Elvis impersonator put on a good show
met some locals that wanted me to win the show and i was in primer ,that felt good. many kept asking about what color i was going to paint it and many told me they liked it the way it was. wish i had made it earlier but we were late getting there.
thanks again, Leo

Yep, was a good time Friday night. My car won the Mayor's Choice trophy Then won the 50/50 raffle, and gave that to the band Then woke up to rain Saturday morning 3 of us that drove down waited until about 10:30 - 11 and figured if we didn't leave then, we would be soaked in by the heavier rain. We left and had to drive on wet roads and sprinkles for 15 miles or so. After that, it was dry and we hightailed it back to St. Louis without a hitch.
Really hope next year the weather cooperates because the roads in that area are MEANT to be driven. Thanks to MACC, Current River Cruisers and the City of Salem for having us! Pics can be found here - Current River Cobra Rally 2012 - a set on Flickr
I want to thank you guys for making the trip in what was a long way from perfect weather.
It rained all day Saturday. Some of the people from the hotel did brave it to visit the local antique shops. Later in the afternoon we shuttled those interested to the local bowling alley for a few games and refreshments. I felt bad that they were stuck in the hotel just looking at each other.
We did have dinner Saturday as planned and 30 attended and we laughed about some of the happenings of the last 2 days. Mr. Rob Benowitz and his family were there. He is the person most responsible for the 100 Acre Rally In The Woods that happens in Salem over the winter and was a great help in setting this event up. Check his facebook page for a photo album from Friday night. He has 60 pics he took with a couple of very good shots of Gateway cars.
Over all I will call the event a success. I know better weather would have helped a lot. The Current River Cruisers did not bring many of their cars because they had used daily cars to set up the food vendor area and then with the weather did not go home to exchange cars. Can't say that I blame them.
The money that we were able to give to the band parents was greatly appreciated and much more than they expected.
