If you have the motor mounts bolted in, the motor won't go anywhere other than tilt a bit. I've had the tranny out several times on my car with the motor still in the chassis. As was stated above, tilt or remove the tunnel cover so the shifter doesn't get stuck and it's simple to get the tranny out.
In fact, the block is in my car as we speak and hopefully putting the tranny back in tonight.
