I, as a typical engineer, am interested in almost everything, and respect originality. Gotta say your project is intriguing, if a bit off the wall. I'll be watching to see how it goes.

Why did you choose multiple items to change? I can see going electric, or air shocks, but why both? Seems like you'll be multiplying your complexity and issues!

Shock-wave with ride pro air system.

As to why I'm doing two things, well I'm doing a lot more than two things. But to answer the question I'm building my dream car - a muscle car (replica) that gets amazing gas mileage and can race the quarter. I'm at a point where I have time and money to do it (I've had to turn down a couple jobs so far) and I'm doing it up (I wanted to build something like this since I read an article in Popular Science in 1984-1985 about hydrocarbon fuel cells).

Air-shocks are being used because these are very different shock / body attitude requirements that I believe air shocks can help with, plus a smooth ride for coast to coast drive...

Besides I already built one electric vehicle ( http://ssinc.us/WebLog.htm )

Curious - What electric motors are you planning on using and where is your source?

I am about to embark on my first Diesel/Electric hybrid and am trying to find a source of parts that is at least reasonable in price..

Thanks!

Ooh, nothing in this project has been about reasonable price. I think your best bet for reasonable would be to get a pluggin hybrid kit for prius (hymotion.com) and 8" / 9" adc / warp motor and maybe a curtis controller (of course there is weight of vehicle, etc.).

The electric atom uses the same motor in the Tzero. Its an AC motor that can use regenterative recharging during braking.

Im curious about the batteries. When I was planning my electric conversion I had issue with using lead-acid deep cycle bats. It seems that Lithium Ion is the way to go but the only ones that would work large scale are the 28v ones from Milwaukee Tools. The ones used in their 28v power tools. I was estimating needing 200 battery packs to give me about a 50 mile range and a recharge time of about 4 hours. Problem was that it would have cost me $20k for the batteries. The motor and drivetrain in an electric is easy its all about the batteries.

here are some links I found while researching:

http://www.evadc.org/build_motor.html
http://www.electricvehiclesusa.com/
http://www.evsource.com/index.php - This place sells the motors and the regulators
http://zapworld.com/cars/salecars.asp - electric cars for sale now

I am going with Biodiesel. I am selling my gassers as we speak on ebay. For now its much more economical for me than a full on electric. Believe me I researched it and I would have to come out of pocket at least 10K to convert my Ford Focus, using lead acid Optimas.

Good luck. I think it will be fun to see when done.

Actually for me the Milwaukee's do not seem to be a good solution. The batteries I'm looking at feature 'Will not explode' which is a new feature and one that is important to me. The greater power density is a bonus as well

But for economy everyone is using lead acid batteries (optimas are very popular as they have a higher density than most).

I too am going with a biodiesel generator. But to be able to race the quarter mile and keep to keep the weight down I need a lot of really good batteries

Oh well, I'm taking the car to the painter today and playing with the electric motor this weekend. Will be borrowing parts from the SSIK MIC

Have Fun,
