Color Choice for Resale

So, I decided to buy Jamie's recent fire damaged car. I'm just finishing the body work on my car, should be in paint within about 4 weeks.

I'm pretty sure my bride won't let me keep both finished cars, unless she wants to keep one, so I might end up selling one of them, and since mine has a 302 in it, and the new one is a 347 with stack injection...seems like my current car might lose that battle.

My plan was to go black on mine with silver stripes. The new car is dark gray with black stripes, black wheels. It'll need either a partial respray or complete paint job (in which case I'd probably do a color change too.)

It seems the general consensus is for resale, blue and white stripes is the way to go. I like the color scheme, but didn't want it for myself just because there are a lot of them. BUT...if I'm planning on selling it, should I just paint it that color (I'm shooting it myself?)

I would presume that a finished colored car sells better than a 100% done except for paint car.

Any advice from you guys, I'd appreciate it!

With no real statistics, just a SWAG:

I would bet on Blue / White, then Red / White.

Other Details

That's sort of what I figured.

Here's the other part of this equation:

Any guesses on stuff like dual vs. single roll bars, hidden body mounts, etc.?

I currently have dual chrome roll bars, and was just about to finish up my hidden body mounts (with quick jack delete) tonight.

It seems like if selling is the plan, making them more like the originals (within reason, of course) is a better way, so going back to single roll bar (black?), and putting the quick jacks on with side hidden mounts might be in order.

My build plan was to do Bentley Gray carpet, so a 2-tone interior with black seats and nicer carpet. Maybe black is better?

Just curious about these little details since I have to do them anyway. I've got some different custom stuff I've done, but most things aren't obvious (led foot box lights, rear bulkhead mod, dropped trunk, etc.)

this might be a crazy idea, but what about a solid color with vinyl stripes? that way the buyer could pull the stripes if he wanted a solid car.

otherwise I'd think single roll bar & try to keep your costs low.

I like that idea in concept, but in reality, I think you're going to have a perceived value issue. By going with the standard Arctic White and Viper Blue, you'll appeal to a lot of folks, plus, at that point, a color change isn't too hard.

Blue with White stripes, Black interior, one roll bar,

If someone wants two- they can add a second- If it has two and they want one- that's a bit tougher...
yes it can be done I know, but most buyers would be reluctant to fill holes and have paint done.

The rest are just bolt ons... Quick jacks? Bumpers? overriders only? Visors? windwings? These can all be added by a potential buyer.

Hidden body mounts are nice, but should not prevent a buyer from buing the car.

Blue and White is what sells....

You can't go wrong with blue, followed by black and red

Why not advertise the car at a certain price to include paint of the buyer's choice? You get the car sold, they get the color combination that they want (with or without stripes) and you can also negotiate the options you're thinking (dual bars, hidden mounts, etc).

If I were looking for one the LAST color I would want is blue/white (no offense to those owners intended) and if I came across one ready for paint, just pick a color, I'd jump at it because then it is "mine" and not buying someone else's color scheme/ideas.

Just my opinion...

Mark

Agree with the B/R primary colors. Many people comment they like blue with the silver stripes as an alternative to white stripes.

Kevin,

Good for you! Go for it! I took wrecked FFR Mark II 3762 that looked like this...

...and turned it in to this.

I went with '64 Ford Guardsman Blue w/Wimbledon White stripes, I tried to rebuild it as close to CSX 3034 (featured on Chasing Classic Cars) as possible but I had 15" Halibrand replica wheels to start with. I removed the P/S roll bar and added a few nice touches.

One word of advice, recheck everything on the car. No offense to the previous builders, but I found a number of big time problems. Problems that caused the car to be in the condition it was in.

Here my F/S link: Mark II IRS PS/PB 347 Roadster

You are more than welcomed to PM me if you have any questions.

Good luck & HIH,

Pat

Forget about Viper Blue (paint code PBE) with Arctic White (paint code WA9567) stripes

You need to paint it Hot Pink and cater it towards the beautiful ladies who are dying for a Cobra painted that color

We actually have a lot of the parts to do one for my wife. She wants to do some sort of girlish color to make it her own. No Mary Kay pink, but there are some decent candies out there that are pinkish.

She'd keep this one if we had the extra cash and time, which we don't right now, but soon enough.

my vote for resale:

1. blue / white
2. red / white
3. all black, no stripes

i've seen a few of those new Mustangs, white & pink stripes. that would be awesome for a lady's FFR.

and there's always vinyl....

Mustang Man (Mark) had the best suggestion. You'll get a lot more interested parties to look at the car if they know they'll get it with the color of their choice

What I might do is a sort of "pre-sale" listing once it's absolutely ready to shoot, and see what kind of traction I get.

I like the idea of holding back as long as you can to let the future owner choose the color.

However, I was thinking today. What about the color of Dave Smiths FFR roadster. First, Silver and now it's Red. There must have been some marketing thought that went into choosing those colors.

And if you remember, Shelby kept changing the color of one of his first cars for advertising. I, however, don't remember what colors they were.

Um, Dave had to change the color for a reason other than marketing and we'll leave it at that...

I really like that story of Shelby repainting the same car 4 or 5 times over the course of a few days to make it look like they had more production cars ready. Cranky old litigious bastard, but that was a pretty good idea!

I sat down yesterday and starting making my spec list on my car, the 3.1. After doing that, I realized just how hard it'll be to sell my own car, the one that I literally put every nut, bolt, and rivet into. Like you guys, I'm sure if you took a DNA sample on any panel, there's literally blood, sweat, and tears on that thing. ;->

My tentative plan right now would be to get the new car, do the rebuild, put my 302 in it, and sell it instead. I have to replace most of the section between the engine bay and the dash, so it's pretty likely it'll need a respray. Getting it in primer, then listing it for sale is probably a good way to go. I'll have my other car as an example of the paint work, and as long as the buyer is willing to wait a few weeks for color, I can do whatever color they want (within the paint source I want to use.) I can transport the car to the buyer, so that makes it a little less complicated. I could also offer a $xx credit after we negotiate the price if they choose to take delivery in primer and have someone shoot it locally for them.

I'll probably try that first and see what kind of traction I get, then if it's weak, I'll pick a color (something mainstream) and do that.

It does appear that silver cars have really grown in popularity, and maybe the MK4 marketing has accelerated that.

Love the feedback, guys, keep it coming!

That's the piece, the P/S cowl area! Also from a Mark II body (3762), very cool if you two can work out a deal. 3762's D/S fender went on to help fix another damaged Cobra.
