serp belt drives for ps and alt

Greetings all ! Been racking (pun intended) up some miles on FFR 5020 and realize my old age requires power steering. I am going to keep my low mount alt (pass Side) and out the pump on the driver side . Undecided on which pump yet , I have the FRpp std rotation water pump with a ribbed pulley set from Fortes. Lookin for a nice clean , not necessarily bling , belt drive setup . What have you used ? I know Fortes has a ps bracket for the pump, I'm thinking that with an idler to ensure good belt wrap.Any input appreciated vendors too .Thanks again Bob

Here is a pic of the CFR set up that I just installed on my 351/363. I had to fab a bracket to attached the lower alt bolt to the head (most of these brackets are made for 302's and the lower alt bolt hole does not line with the 351 head given the taller deck height, everything else fits fine on a 351). You can see the bracket just above the blue AN wrench in the second photo. I'm quite happy with the set up and it comes in a number of finishes if you don't want the bling, was about half the cost or a March set up. (they also run sales over most of the long/holiday weekends). My 2 cents. Regards Scott

I think you're going to find that 4 pulleys with a single serpentine belt is going to require a reverse rotation water pump which will be driven by the smooth side of the belt.

I bet if he does a low mount PS pump with the CFR brackets, he can make a loop that might just work. Again, not much belt wrap on the crank or water pump but a well placed idler could help out with that. Below is a pic of my setup but with the reverse rotation water pump. If you just put the belt over the top of the water pump thats what it would look like. My alt bracket is from Kirkham and the PS bracket is from CFR. You could probably mount a small idler on the Kirkham bracket to get more belt wrap on the crank.

Talking Belt wrap

FWIW, it doesn't take much belt wrap to make the water pump work well. Picture below is my "driver side alternator" relocation setup, reverse rotation water pump. No issues with cooling after 10K+ miles in the Las Vegas area.
If I ever decide to go with PS, I'll switch to Mikes setup and never worry about cooling.

It's not the belt wrap I'm talking about, it's the fact that when driven off the smooth side of the belt such as in Mark's or Doc's pics the water pump is turning counterclockwise, i.e. reverse rotation.

Yeah belt wrap , some of the newer stuff I work on uses reverse rotation water pumps and all have about 1/3 or less wrap. The old 5.0 stuff had to drive the fan as well so more wrap. I think with having ribs on the pulley that should give enough grip to turn the pump,. I own several reverse timing covers and used water pumps to match . I'm trying to avoid scrapping the nice FRpp water pump on there now . Perhaps if/when it fails I'll go to reverse rotation .thanks for the pics and advice I now have a direction to proceed in Bob
