Trunk expansion for pre Mark 4 cars

I'm thinking about expanding the trunk in my Mark 1 this winter. I don't believe Cobra Earl sells his expansion kit any longer so the only other option I am aware of in a premade kit is DarkWater’s.
  • If you have a Darkwater kit how do you like it? Any installation tips?
  • Has anyone installed the DarkWater kit without pulling the gas tank?
  • Does anyone else sell a trunk expansion kit that will fit a Mark 1?
  • Anyone have plans or pics for building your own?
Thanks

John / FFR 1827,

Very happy with our DWC trunk kit. We installed during the build, but it shouldn't be that big of a deal to do on a finished car. We added pinch on molding to the lid for a finished look and then had aluminum frames made to frame out the openings and covered them in vinyl to match.

HTH...

Hey John,
One other thing I did with my MK1 is the curved trunk hoop. If you dont have one already, it really opens up the top of the trunk and makes it more useable. Below is a link. I have no experience with the trunk kits but I have seen a bunch of different ones over the years. Probably be best to take the tank out but I am sure it can be done without taking it out. Good Luck with it...

I made my own. It was pretty simple to do. I did mine with the tank installed, but I did have the floor out. I keep jumper cables, tools and cleaning supplies in it.

My buddy MPTech made a patten with some heavy craft paper, and we made up one for his Mrk IV, and now one for my Mrk III. Not that hard to do. Ran out of aluminum, still have to make the one end panel, then cut out the opening in the original trunk floor.

While you are at it, make 2 access holes w/covers for the sender and fuel pump. Someday you will need to replace them and you won't have to drop the tank.
