hello, just purchased a ffr from one of the member's here,
trying to get it it titled in NJ, one of the things i am needing is the
shifter ball with the pattern, anyone have one they want to get rid of?
also just in case what is the thread size?
Back in the day we just bolted the stock Mustang handle and knob to the shifter to get through inspection then changed it once through. What handle do you have so we can help with a knob with the right threads. I think FFR's come with the pattern on them now come to think of it, I may have an extra.

If my old brain remembers correctly I got mine from Speedway Motors, came with inserts to fit different sized shafts.

Like Dan I got the white Hurst shifter from Summit. I think I had to rethread it to get it to fit, but it wasn't a big deal.
Also, in NJ, I am assuming the car was never completed and titled and you are going to the tech inspection in Asbury Park? The regs say that the shift pattern needs to be indicated, it doesn't say it has to be on the ball. You can make up a plate, decal, or even a post it note and put it on the dash and it should suffice to meet the requirements. If it has already been titled in another state, then you shouldnt need to bother with the technical inspection and its just a transfer.

Could an engraver, like one of the trophy places do it for you on the original ball just to get you through inspection? You could fill the lines with white touch-up paint. You could google Tremec shift knobs, I know they are available.

I just had my Coupe inspected at a Car Show just for Chits and Grins.
The shift pattern was one of the things mentioned. I had never thought about that.
I think Im going to have a small plaque made up to attach to the trans cover.
The other thought is: Why make it easier to steal?
Maybe I ll do nothing.
Whew, maybe I need to rest now after all that thought.
Don't most of the standard shift knobs point the pattern away from you when installed on these shifters? I want to get someone to sell one un-drilled so I can drill and tap it to make the pattern show up better. Or maybe if I just re-drill one I could use the old hole to tuck a line lock button up in there. The button on top always seemed like it would be easy to hit accidentally, although I've never driven a car with one.

The place I linked to (Epco) sells them with the engraving on the side so that it points up when installed. Just a thought if you really want one.

yes nj requires shift pattern, the (foreign/salvage/reconstructed titling dept.) personnel tell me, every time i get a different answer about the titling procedure, yes since the car was already titled in illinois you would think common sense would say, just need to transfer to NJ, no, they want to go threw the whole process again! so far it's 2 weeks to get the titling package (which can only be done by mail!) i next day mailed back, now 2-3 weeks to process the forms, they fax the forms to the nj inspection (westfield) morristown that was 11 miles away was closed because of flooding, then 2-3 weeks to wait to get the car inspected, which you have to get the car flatbeded there for the safety inspection! (i may try to borrow a dealer plate) then i am not sure they may stamp it approved and i can go and get the car titled, who knows what procedure getting the plates will be like!
the factory five shifter is 3/8" 24 fine thread, seems the norm is 3/8 16 coarse thread, i rather not spend $40 plus shipping, then have go and retap it with a treaded insert, if i can get one on the cheap that needs to be rethreaded would go that route.
Bucket, if you PM me an e-mail address I can shoot you a list of the other things that they typically look for. As I mentioned earlier shift pattern doesn't have to be on the ball, it just has to be represented.
The bigger issue with our cars is usually a brake failure light, either pressure activated or fluid level activated, wipers, two roll bars or one per seat, and side pipe heat shields.
As for what happens after the inspection, you will typically get the title in the mail and then can register it. As you have already been titled I am not sure how that is going to work, but maybe PM MRMustang on here, he has bought and sold more replica cobra's then anyone I know.

Hey Bucket,
Sparky above offered up a shift knob for you if you still need it. Another note on the flatbed, I dont think you can get away with a dealer plate, we couldnt in CT. They didnt want the wheels touching the road til it was inspected so you would be stuck with a trailer or flatbed for transport. The brake failure light is usually tapped into the master cylinder like the FOX mustangs. Otherwise I guess theres a pressure switch you can put inline. Good Luck with the rest of the process, hope it goes smoother.

got a shifter lever and ball with a pattern for a fair price, so if anyone needs a straight lever and plain ball i have one cheap, the brake system and driveline were all from the 96 mustang gt donor car, including the abs, is the abs light considered a brake failure light?, so i will look for the brake light switch to make sure, thanks for the heads up on the dealer plate idea, thanks again to all

i passed NJ inspection! i located from finishline a shifter handle with trigger, well the thread pattern is 1/2" 20 thread, after buying the 3/8" 24 (fine) with the 5 speed on it, i am now in need of the 5 speed ball for this lever now (this is more common size), so i now have 2 ffr bent levers, 1 with the 5 pattern, 1 without,
i also upgraded from summit (manufactured by steeda) short throw shifter,
what a difference, takes about 30% of throw out!
I've been driving my MKI for 12 years now and just switch from the FFR black ball to a Hurst type ball (white w/5 speed pattern) along with a "dog leg" shifter (also from summit) and what a better set up, especially for track. Hurst type ball is much larger and easier to grip and the dog leg moves the shifter to a more up right position. Much better for track.
We have them in stock in both the 12mm [mustang] or 3/8" [hurst] We have them in white /black $35.00 or brushed aluminum $55.00. We also have in 3/8" only chrome steel $35.00
