Replacement boot - ower ball joint?

OK - finally got around to properly torquing the front ball joints/spindles, and discovered the pass side lower boot is completely shot. Torn/broken completely around the circumference of the boot - so it's now two separate pieces. (1st picture)

Driver side boot is fine - 2nd picture

Looking for a part number for a replacement boot - hopefully that one that I can source at a local auto parts.

And if the answer is 'get one for an sn95 spindle/ball joint' or whatever, since I'm not exactly clear where the sn95 is/was used on an OEM basis, please clarify what year, etc part I should be asking for.

(As a side note, I was frankly somewhat surprised when I searched the Forum that there was so little re; replacement lower boots ... but I may have not used the right search terms. Lots of info re: the upper boot, but very little for the lower.)

Many thanks

Lynn

Google "energy suspension dust boots" and you will get quite a few threads that lead to common sources such as Summit Racing, etc. I don't know if any supporting vendors have them, if they do I hope they chime in as I would support them first.

This was referenced in a prior post:
"I have Fortes LCAs. I used part#ENS-5-13102r from Summit. I think the r is for red. Seem to work fine. Much better than FFR supplied.Hope it's some help. "
A second post:
"Summit Racing # ENS-5-13102G or Energy Suspension #913130R for the upper and lower dust boots."

I received my KK4 in Oct 10 and earlier this year found both FL ball joint boots rotted. I called FFR and they said they got a bad batch of boots and replaced mine for free including the cost of shipping. Might give them a call and see if they will replace your boots.

That pass side boot is dry rotted. Definitely try FF first like John said.

Thanks for the part numbers - AND for the info regarding FFR recently having had a batch of dry-rotted boots.

I was hoping to pick up a replacement boot today and be able to complete the spindle torquing this weekend, but it make senses to wait till Monday and give them a call.

I received my kit almost exactly 1 year ago - so it's "fresher" than John's and with both of his dry rotted boots having been replaced - they likely will help me out as well.

So I guess I'll go back to wrapping up the e-brake cable routing, then tackle the clutch slave bracket mounting and sort out a passenger side "low" alternator mount. (BTW - suggestions on a "low" alternator mount would be really helpful.)

Thanks again for the help. It's always helpful and much appreciated.

Lynn

Good call John on contacting FFR re: the failed (dry rotted) lower ball joint boot.

I just spoke to Dan in Tech Support who asked that I send him a couple pictures (which I did), and I expect a replacement boot will arrive shortly.

Thanks for the heads up about what you encountered, and more importantly - for sharing the solution!

Lynn

I got replacement boots from FFR.

As for low alternator on passenger side - I used Mike Everson's alternator mounting kit. When you rotate your alternator to the low position, relocate the belt adjusting rod below the water pump snout. You'll have to buy one longer water pump bolt.

A few times posted a wrong procedure or got my facts wrong but sharing is what this site is all about, share and support. I usually contact FFR tech support for most items like the boots, part doesn't look quite right etc, then search ffcars.
The only time FFR hasn't supported me is the cover plates for the windshield posts. They sent two of the same side and so when you flip it over and it is dull not polished, their responce was buy a new piece or polish the one you got.

Hey Kevin -
Thanks for the tip re: using Mike Everson's alternator mounting kit for a "low" passenger side application. I sent him an inquiry note a few days but haven't heard back yet. (He normally replies pretty quickly - so he may be traveling or ???)

Couple quick questions:
Are you using Power Steering along with your "low" alternator mount? (My PS is Ford OEM-style on the DS)
Is your water pump standard or reverse rotation? (mine is reverse - Edelbrock 8840)
Did you need to add a supplemental serp. belt tensioner to get everything working??

Thanks again.

Lynn

They did the same thing to me, but sent me the other side. Swapped it out for me. They exist, why they didnt send one to you doesnt make sense.

Lynn,

I don't have power steering. I do have a standard rotation water pump. (I actually bought the Std Rotation pump kit from Mike.) I only have one belt - Goodyear 4060360 or 6PK915.

Bummer ... at least for me

Guess it's time to make this ... my quest for a cost effective "low" passenger side alternator mount that'll work with PS and a reverse rotation water pump ... into a separate thread.

Thanks

Lynn

Just got my car on the ground today, and noticed my driver side lower control arm boot was torn apart as well. awaiting a response from ffr. How safe is it without replacing this boot? in other words, leaving it as is?

The boot holds the grease in. With the boot torn the wear on the joint will be accelorated could cause it to lock. I wouldn't drive around with it torn. If your in the build stage fix it now a lot easier now than later.
