I just tried one down in the basement and it fits just fine. I dont know if the 7.5 pinion flanges are different than the 8.8 ones but its the only thing I can think. Mine goes on in different spots so its not indexed or anything. Sometimes they have a key so it only goes on one way but not this one. Maybe try measuring the ID and OD of the two pieces for verification. I got about 1.310" ID across my flange which is definitely an 8.8 one.
