No. I have the same stock 89' radiator (brand new) and it fits perfectly.
Make sure you put on the new 16lb cap before installation so that you have enough room for the cap to clear the frame or you'll end up drilling out a new set of holes and readjusting it.

I put a 20# cap on the radiator since I have a 16# cap on the T-filler. I wasn't sure those expanding rubber plugs would hold in the radiator so the 20# cap should make it so the cap on the T-filler opens and the one on the radiator never does.

I did the same thing and also ran a line back to overflow jug and tee'd it to overflow line from filler neck near jug just in case a cap failure and it opens at a lower pressure. That way it would prevent hot coolant going who knows where and even making in to driver's compartment at speed going down the highway
Ive noticed that the radiator cap doesn't fully close the hole, doesnt reach. I had to just plug the overflow nozzle. Otherwise coolant would keep exiting. Even went to look at other caps at AZ and didnt see any with a taller stem.

I used a plug like this to seal the driver's side radiator cap opening:
Here's a pic of my donor style radiator cap area. You can see I have the rad shoved over to the passenger side far enough that I couldn't even fit a traditional rad cap on there:
The plug does extend deep enough to seal the overflow nipple but I filled the hole with silicone and added a rubber cap to cover it for extra security.
Has worked well for me for many miles now.
I have Mike Fortes' degas tank as my fill point.

If you have a brass tank radiator, take it to a radiator shop and have the filler neck removed and covered. Nothing to worry about now!
Just keep it simple...less to go wrong!

yep...like steno said ...have the radiator shop close it off (braze shut). my guy even put a petcock valve in its place to release air trapped in system.

You are correct...the cap won't fit as expected. I had to drill new holes on the frame mount and move the tank closer to the driver side to make the cap fit. It works perfectly once you move it over and eliminates the need to fabricate an alternate solution.
Where can I buy a plug like this? It appears it even closes off the overflow nozzle.
Thank You

I have purchased plugs like that at McMaster-Carr that look about that size but don’t have an exact size or number you can use. Look under “test plugs”.
My mustang radiator had a rubber plug that worked fine for 7 yrs. When I upgraded to an aluminum Summit replacement I got a similiar plug from the local hardware store. I guess it was made for a plumbing project cause it blew out on the first test drive. that's why i went w/ the 20# cap.
