Hi All,
I'll have my MKIV on the road in a few days. I'm asking here before I join the CACC:
How do you get a 65 MKIV registered in Va with antique plates? Va DMV titled it as a 1965 Factory Five MKIV, built in 2012 very quickly. I'm sure the built in 2012 footnote is causing a mind freeze for DMV.
The local DMV agrees that the provision below allows us to register replicas as antique but their system won't allow it. DMV Richmond is not reading the provision correctly, won't allow the local DMV to do it, yet can't explain why it can't be registered.
"§ 46.2-602.1. Titling and registration of replica vehicles.
Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, the model year of vehicles constructed or assembled by multiple manufacturers or assemblers shall be the model year of which the vehicle is a replica. No vehicle titled under this section shall be driven more than 5,000 miles per year as shown by the vehicle's odometer. No vehicle titled under this section shall be automatically eligible for antique motor vehicle license plates provided for in § 46.2-730."
Richmond keeps saying that the "the model year of vehicles constructed" means the year in which it is constructed, which is obviously wrong. The local DMV understands this it is referring to a 65replica as a 65 replica. Surely someone must have run into this recently and remedied it. I have seen at least four 65 AC replicas around with antique plates. (Section 46.2-730 does not exclude replicas for antique plates either.)
I had my roadster registered as an antique in 2003. With the passing of the SEMA bill in VA, it created a separate catagory for kit or component built cars. It's very clear that they will be titled as the year they are replicating, but they will be registered with a standard VA plate, not an antique.
That is how I will have to register my coupe. I do believe you can purchase vintage plates, and go that route. I have some 1965 plates I bought at a car show and will try to use them first.
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me where in the code it says that? DMV is unable to quote me the provision. They are literally telling me "just because" and refer me to the code that I listed below, which says you can register it that way. If I'm wrong, I'll accept it, but I know for a fact there are several post SEMA replicas regsitered as antique in my area.(just trying to locate them) I may have found the area in the other data line of my title where DMV made an error, hence blocking the system from allowing the transaction.
Just going by what they told me at the DMV office, after the bill passed. I think the key is how you title the vehicle. I titled my roadster before I registered it. When the time came, I walked in with a title that said "1965" roadster, and they registerd it as such.I've seen several guys in the tidewater area go to smaller DMV offices, and tell them confidently what they have, and they have registered as an antique.
Even though the code has created the kit category, they still are not on the same page when it comes to how they register them.
Good luck,
Rob

I tried to register with 1965 plates, and they would not allow it.
