Running a carb 302, and I am planning to mount my Water temp sensor for my radiator in the bottom of myFortes De-Gas tank mounted on the F-panel. I am wondering if anyone else has run this set-up and if so what temperature range for the senor/switch are you using? I was looking at the painless P/N 30110 that has an off temp at 185 and and on at 200?
If you use this setup how has the sensor worked or would you go with a different temp setup?
I am using a relay and a overide switch in addtion but want to have the sensor also control when the radiator is on or not.
Thanks for the input!

My sensor is inserted between the radiator coils at the top of the radiator. I believe that is the normal location and would give the most relevant temp. By the time you start seeing a rise in temp in the degas tank, I would think it would be too late. But I am no expert on this.

The degas tank is closer to the engine than the radiator, so hot water flows through it before getting to the radiator. In truth its six of one, half dozen of the other.
Mine is in the manifold. If youmount the sensor after the thermostat then you will not get an accurate reading until the engine is up to temp. My thought on that is if your thermostat failed you wouldn't know until your car overheated.

My only reaction is that is why I have a temp guage as well to assure that the temp doesn't get out of control. I was planning a overide switch as well, but that too won't do me much good if the thermostat is stuck closed.... point taken..but then again a sensor on the engine that turns on the fan won't do much good as well if the thermostat is stuck closed...
But the bigger question is what is the optimum water temperature for a 302 with a carb? Should I get a temp sensor then to match the thermostat or do I get one that matches the optimumn temperture range of the engine? In other words, is 185 measured at the radiator a good rating, or is 185 measured at the erngine a better setting? Is 185 the right turn on temp? This is my dilema.
No matter where I mount the sensor, what temp range and on/off position should I be trying to sense?
I'm confused with this what appears to be a simple project.....

It is my understanging that you want engine temp, not radiator temp. If you have a sensor after the radiator then your fan will come on when the radiator gets 180*, not your engine.

If you buy an adjustable fan switch like the one breeze sells, you can set it to what you want. Just get the engine to the operating temp and then adjust the fan setting accordingly. If its running too hot you can turn it down.
Mike
Thanks Mike I appreciate the input, and that was one of the directions I was looking at, but I guess my question is what is a normal and/or acceptable running temp for the engine. I guess the easiest answer is it is what it is and will vary, but just trying to see what everyone has been seeing for operating temps...
I haven't fired the engine yet so you can see my dilema, but basically what is everyone's normal operating temp of a carvburated 302 motor?
