Can I fit 315/35/17

I have an MKII. I would like to upgrade to 315s on 10.5 rims but wondering if I will have enough room without doing any major improvements? My current wheels are 9" with 275/40R17. If I remember correct they are 6.5" backspaced.
1st question I have what seems to be quite a bit of room. The sidewall of the tire is at least 1.5" away from coils spring. I don't see anything closer than that. I would also like to keep the tires within lip of body which they currently are.
1. Do I have enough room to accomplish this?
2. If so what backspacing do I need?
3. Does any one make a chrome Cobra R in a 17" X 10.5? This would result in the purchase of only 2 wheels and someone else would probably never know if you know what I mean?

Hopefully Mr Oben will chime in as he seems to be the guru on all of this.
Any suggestions from anyone who has done this would be greatly appreciated.

Yes - but.....

Richard is the master on this but I will tell you that's what I'm running and you have to be very careful with the back spacing. Team III makes a fully polished 10.5 X 17 wheel, I think American has a 10 X 17 polished or chrome wheel.
I'm running the Team III's and the back space is off by about 3/4 of an inch. Mine are 6.5 inches backspace. According to Richard and the guy from Team III the axles on my car are the newer 8.8 axles and are longer to allow for the ABS hardware (not running with ABS). I'm also running 315/17 Sumi's. I will be purchasing Richard axle kit this fall and hopefully that will pull the wheels in. I'd talk to him first before you do anything.

I have 315's on my MK1 and they are tight with the Fox width rearend. My frame had to be modified for them to fit but yours looks like the newer version which shouldnt require any modification. If you pull the wheel and take a picture, we'll be able to tell for sure. The Nitto 315's run narrow and some have gotten away without any mods at all. You can get a chrome Cobra R in 10.5" that should be the correct backspacing for you from American Muscle for $169 a piece. Looks just like the 9" version but the lugnut wells are extra deep. Hope this helps.

Great info so far. I will look those wheels up. Any idea of backspacing I need. I will try and get a picture within the next day or so.

Running 315x35x17's on Halibrand Cobra III's, early coupe which I believe is based on the MKII.

Wheels should be like these dimensionally
Anthracite Deep Dish Bullitt Mustang Wheel 94-04 (17x10.5) at AmericanMuscle 28111 - Free Shipping!
The bullits above are available in chrome and here are the Cobra Rs mentioned above
Chrome 1995 Style Cobra R Wheel 94-04 Mustang (17x10.5) at AmericanMuscle 28015 - Free Shipping!
Over the years I have bought three sets of wheels from these guys and have been happy every time.
Do some research on the 315 mod and look at your car to compare. On my late MkII I had to do that mod w/ the exception of moving the tube that goes out to the door latch. Some of this depends on how low you like your car. Mine is at 4 inches in the back.

You can ask Doc about his but I had to do some frame mods to get them to fit my MK1 with a Fox width rear and mine are really close to the outside on the MK1 body. PM me an email address and I can send you pictures of the 315 frame mods. Yours looks like mine did before the mods.

The last pic of MGNs in the MkI 315 mod thread that 5.8 Cobra provided links to looks just like what I did to my mkII. This has worked fine w/ my Sumis on the American Muscle sourced wheels I linked to above. The full 315 mod cut the crosswise 2x3 tube so that the 3/4x3/4s needed to be moved. I didn't want to do that so I did it like MGN did.
