First GoKart!!

Just made my first Go-Kart ride today - YouTube post here:

I have a pre-oiler oil pump that runs before I start the motor - that's what you hear before the engine starts.

I pulled it forward a bit to test the brakes, then off I go!!

Already got my SB100 number and certificate last week - so the Brake and Light inspection is next!!

Derrick

Yay! I'm so excited for you!!!! Now drive it over here.

I love your friends shriek when you pushed on it a little. Made me smile.

Just want to mention that I was impressed at how easily you backed it in.

Have fun with all your "test drives"!

First impressions

Thanks Caseys - Now that I can gather my thoughts, I have a few first impressions:

First, the gas pedal/throttle response was spot-on - felt very natural, not to heavy, but also not too twitchy, very easy to modulate. I'm glad I went with mechanical linkage - easy to change ratios...

Also, this thing is going to be STUPID fast - that little throttle blip REALLY moved the car along!!

Steering is a bit heavy at slow speeds, but I knew that going in with 275 front tires - Nothing I can't live with...

Next step - Wire headlight/taillights, and head to the brake and light inspection!!

DV, great go-kart video and congrats on the milestone. Love the brake test. We have a steep driveway and that was my biggest fear with the go-kart, once I started to back up I would be on the hill... :-)

Good times for sure!!

Talking Congrats

Good idea to test the brakes before going out on the streets. They seemed to work real well in the driveway, just not so good at the two STOP signs you completely blew thru. LOL! With you living in Anaheim, I completely understand the "California Stop" thing.

Engine sounds mean and should give you many unexpected surprises until you've had a chance to be behind the wheel for a bit, these cars are notorious for unexpected OOPS happenings.

Get that clutch adjusted, reverse shouldn't be that hard to get into . . .

Congratulations on your build and go-cart milestones.

Thanks!!, Yes, still have some clutch adjustment - and on the "stop sign" thing - as the saying goes "I TOTALLY PAUSED!!"...

Derrick, Remember you have to have a VIN # before you can get a Brake and Light inspection.
CHP first, then BAR, then B&L and last DMV.

Congrat on the Go-Cart!

Got VIN

Frank - Got through the first gauntlet already - got the SB100 cert in the mail - VIN was assigned, and is in the DMV system - Now following the DMV instructions, I get the Brake & Light inspection first (using a "one day pass"), then back to DMV to get a temp op permit, then appointment at the CHP for their inspection, then BAR, then BACK to the DMV for final reg.

Derrick, DMV doesn't issue the VIN, CHP does. The temp VIN on your paper work now is all going to change when you go to CHP. I'm just trying to help, but if you go for a B&L without the VIN assignment from CHP you'll be making a second appointment. I'll shut up now.

All Hail to Frank!!

Frank - Of course you were right - I went home at lunch time and took a second look at the DMV paperwork - my next step IS the CHP inspection...

Called them for an appointment - prior forum posts indicated that the wait time was weeks and weeks... The nice lady said the next available appointment is on August 13th - wait, WHAT? I'm not ready!!

Apparently the office near me (I'm NOT tellin' where) - is not that busy...

I'll have to thrash to get the body on, windshield and lights mounted, etc.. , but good to have an idea of what the wait time is for the CHP...

So, here goes: Frank was right, Frank was right, Frank was right, Frank was right, Frank was right, Frank was right, Frank was right, Frank was right, Frank was right, (continued)

Thinking ahead about how to get the car around to all the inspections/places you need to go to without all the paperwork completed...

Can you get a 'One Day Pass' from DMV to take the car to the CHP inspection, or is the pass only available for the Brake and Light inspection?

Or can you get more than a 'One Day' pass before the VIN and B&L are completed?

SB100 process

Here's what I have - I went to DMV last week, and started the special construction registration process, DMV called Sacramento, and got the SB100 number. They gave me the "Referral form" for the CHP inspection, and a one day pass to get to the CHP. A few days later, I got the SB100 cert in the mail.

I just called the CHP for an appointment and will get it inspected soon.

Here's what I understand - I then go back to the DMV to get a temporary operating permit, which I can use to get the BAR and brake and light inspection, then back to the DMV to get the final REG.

Please chime in if this is not correct...

Thanks - - Derrick

If you are really nice to the gal at the DMV you may be able to get a 30 day temp op permit to complete all of your appointments. One thing to remember, get insurance first. If it were me, I would beg, borrow or steal a trailer and take care of all the inspection that way, for the time it takes in line to get T.O.P.'s from the DMV. What's your time worth?

This one is for Derrick and anyone else going to CHP for a VIN assignment; this is not a safety inspection. California has no safety inspection as part of the process for registration of SPCNS vehicles other than the brake and light inspection. The only thing CHP is interested in, is whether the parts on you vehicle can be accounted for (not stolen). The other purpose is for VIN assignment. Hope this help.

Good info frank. The dmv gave julie a 30 day temp permit when she got the sb100 and she never asked for it. We wont be done in time to use it, but its my backup in case i get busted for go karting LOL. Like that will help!
