I am looking for the best battery I can fit into my Breeze front mount battery box. Instructions say it has to be a BCI Group 51 sized battery. I was hoping for a battery with about 550 to 600 CCA but have not been able to locate one as yet.
I need it to start a 430 HP EFI 6.2 litre V8.
Do I actually need this many CCA?
Thanks everyone.

Just installed a new Optima Yellow Top DR51 in my ERA 289FIA

And just to check, you have a 4.6L EFI right? And does the optima start this engine easily?
I have a high compression 4.6L 32V DOHC with an Accel Gen 7 ECU (very voltage dependent) and yes, it fires it right up.

I have the same battery in my 417 HP 347 Stroker and it starts just fine. I think the Optimas are the best, but fairly expensive. Your call.

Do some reading on the Optimas. people are having problems with them since the company was sold. Not the same as they used to be. I also got the top battery from Autozone and it has worked flawlessly since I changed it. I do keep it on a tender while in the garage, to keep it in good condition too.

CCA's have nearly doubled in output since the 1970's, when the rule was 1 per cubic inch. That was a hard sell up in those days, too. Nobody wanted to spend $40 on a battery when a $24 dollar one would fire up a 12:1 compression 400 cubic inch motor using an old heavy non magnetic copper wound starter. Simply too expensive.
The industry recommendation for high output these days is based on the power consumption of an EFI equipped car with numerous accessories equipped with a 160 amp alternator. Now the marketing is all about the battery being an adequate capacitor for the alternator, and undersizing it might be detrimental.
So, does the roadster have power seats, stereo, a power moonroof, power tailgate, power side doors, GPS, a DVD player with two display screens, and an interactive cell link to summon a mechanic when you have a flat? Probably not.
That brings up how much alternator might be on the car, too. If it's got EFI and a stereo, maybe 120 amps is still more than enough. A Gen3 alternator would do. If carb, then it's a bit big, and you could drop down to less than 100. That brings up another area - don't use underdrive pulleys, they impede that alternator putting out power. If a few hp is that important, rethink how much rotational mass and electrical capacity is needed anyway. Don't forget that an $1,100 set of underdrive pulleys still won't free up more hp than a 6 qt oil change with synthetic. You can buy a lot of 5-20 syn for that cash.
Here's a point of perspective - take a look at what Mazda specs for a Miata. That battery is barely much larger than the one in your riding lawn mower, and the only complaint about them is maintenance based - poor venting in the trunk causes some corrosion.
Bigger isn't necessarily better, and can be detrimental. "Right" size the components in the system, and you won't spend more than needed, consume more than needed, and carry more than needed. It's a matter of performance as much as cost.
I bought my Optima 9 years ago, and it is still fine. Just replaced the wet cell in my Jeep two years ago, and it is fine today.

Yes they did have issues when they were sold as the new owners cut corners to cut costs and maximize profits. When that blew up in their face, they switched back to the original specs. You spend all that money on a kit, engine, suspension, massive amounts of upgrades, then you spend little to nothing on a battery. To each his own, my $169.95 was money well spent.....

... because a $60.00 maintenance free battery starts my engine just as well as a $169.00 pretty yellow or red battery. I have been known to upgrade things because they are pretty, just not the battery.

X2 on Bill's logic. I've used Advance for thirty years and put one in my FFR. They work great and have always been very fair with their warranties.

Would I be able to use a 500cc amp, group 51 battery, if its mounted in the trunk? I like how small the battery is but will I have enough juice once the power wire is routed to the front of the car? I have 306 EFI
I'll put a good word in for Odyssey batteries, the best I've ever had. I have a small pc680 in my 360 cubic inch aircraft and it turns that over fine all winter long and I've never put a charger on it. I'm thinking of using the same in the roadster. These newer tech batteries are amazing.
Dave
The model 51 (as opposed to 51R) also makes the positive cable to mini-starter run a hair shorter and simpler in my opinion.
I have been using an Optima yellow top for more than 6 years now. I do maintain it in the winter months with a Batter Tender, but it has never failed to spin up my 9.9:1 compression ratio, 396 c.i. EFI engine at any time. I am pretty sure the A9L computer I am using retards the ignition timing a little while cranking though, so that does help make the battery's job a little easier.
