Mk4 hinge on MK3.1

Has anyone used the mk4 hidden trunk hinges on a 3.1 trunk? The hoop bracket looks straightforward. What about the deck lid? Bond to the 3.1 lid or replace the lid with a mk4 lid?

Nope. Just but an MK4 trunk and install it. That's exactly what I'm doing.

Cheers

Why wouldn't you just use the Breeze hinges??

trunk

Just remember if you go with mk4 trunk you will have problems with license plate fitting do a search and see if you want to deal with that problem

What convincor said. Great design with tons of adjustability, more cost effective than replacing the lid, no retrofit or welding required.

I have nothing but great reviews for the Breeze hinge. However, I wanted to add the gas struts to keep the lid open as shown on another thread and that looked easier to do with the flat MK4 hinges rather than the round Breeze hinge. I would think the attachment to the trunk lid would be the same for either method.

I have a kit for installing a hidden lift support for the Breeze hinges. It does require drilling and tapping the hinge arms, but it's no big deal. I haven't even putit on my site yet. It will work for all mark 4s as well.

No. The new mk4 just has a "L"shape shape bracket that gets pop-riveted to the lid like the hood.
Breeze has a stud plate that gets bonded to the lid.

Actually the Mk4 lid has nut-serts to fasten the "L" bracket to. There are slots in the bracket to allow for adjustment. A great idea in theory, not so much as executed. In reality those inserts spin in the glass when you attempt to tighten the bolts so you can't hold the adjustment and you end up riveting it after all.

They do have metal backer in there also correct? Still, with the stress of closing the lid with the grass struts attached to the hinge... How's that gonna hold up over time?? Nothing against anyones products. Just don't think gas struts belong on a glass car. JMO
I think if I do a mk4 (still undecided ), It'll do Breeze hinges and a MG style prop. Same as my mk3 had..

Since I have a 3.1, is there any reason a bracket made to fit the mk4 hinge could not be glassed into the 3.1 deck rather than buying a mk4 deck?

You probably could, but it would be cheaper and easier to buy the Breeze hinges. The FFR hinges will require welding unless they offer a retrofit kit.
