Broke a Heilcoil in head

The bolt that holds my alternator, from the bracket to the head was a to short. It broke part of the heilcoil that was in the head. So now I either get a longer bolt or remove the existing heilcoil and replace with a new one. How do you remove an existing heilcoil ??? I have a 392 crate motor with aluminum heads and don't want to destroy the ability to R & R the heilcoil.

How do you get it out? You heat the head up to release the red loctite on it and you dig it out with a sharp pick instrument.. Preferrably one with a 45 to 90 degree bend in the end of it.. It's a PITB but you can get it out...

Helicoil removal

Mikey:

There is actually a Helicoil removal tool. It has some sharp projections that grab the helicoil so you can twist it out. I don't know how much they cost, but some aircraft mechanics use them. Once it's out, if the threads aren't buggered up, you can put in a new helicoil.

Randy is right, though. If they installed the helicoil with red loctite, bearing and bushing locker with high removal effort, you will for sure have to heat that hole up to get the helicoil out whether you use the tool or the sharp pick method. That may be true even if they used blue medium.

Thanks for the information.... I will call Monday to make the purchase. I don't want any problems going to Monterey.

Picture of 1227-6

I did find a pic of that tool. I dawned on me that maybe the reason the helicoil broke in the first place is that the bolt is not going to the bottom of the threads. Not bottoming, mind you, but using all the threads that are available instead of just a few at the top of the hole. Might not hurt to check it with a small probe with the bracket in place to see how long the bolt needs to be.

Item No: TI-8020 [Insert Extracting Tool]

Ordered it

I was given a 6" bolt with the kit to mount my alternator. It seemed to only thread into very little.... so I ordered a 6 1/2 & 7 " to use the entire threads.... if the 7 is a bit too long I can grind it down.... still hoping not to have to remove the remaining heilcoil.

Are you sure it is a helicoil and not an insert? On the stock Ford heads one of the holes on the end of the heads is used for the air pump without the insert in place and as an accessory mount with the insert in place. Looks like this:

Available from Summit Racing P/N 51400265

If this is the case then a bolt extractor may work better.

Cheers, Rod

The bolt should be 6.5 the 7 will be too long. I would leave the helicoil alone unless you can't get it to work with the longer bolt.
