Mad Rev Counter

Just before I order a new one, I thought I had better check.

We were driving through France and I noticed I was doing 6,000 rpm, then 7,000 rpm, then 8,000 rpm - all at a steady 80mph on fifth. Next thing I know it kept going round, past 0 and back to 2,500 or so!

Since when, it has just been all over the place, so I am not really sure what's going on. Sometimes steady and presumably accurate, next minute off the scale again.

Bin it?

Ian

Is it a mechanical or electrical gage?

8,000 rpm in fifth

Sorry, an electrical Autometer gauge, Vintage look - standard FFR issue!

Does your tach gets it's signal from the coil or from a designated output on your ignition box. I remember reading somewhere that it's OK to connect it to the coil if you don't have a high powered ignition box but most people do in these cars. I don't know what would happen if you did connect it to the coil under those circumstances, though. I'd try re-calibrating it and if that doesn't work go for a warranty replacement. I'm guessing you'll have to replace it since it seems to work sometimes and not others.

Red line

The rev counter is connected to the coil. The distributor is a conventional Mallory unit with an electronic something where the points should be, so not full electronic igntion and no box anywhere.

The instruments is a few years old now, so no hope of Warranty!

I'll just order a new one!

Thanks for trying.
