Rectangular Tailights - Before you buy...

Always wanted the rectangular lights to make the car more "Authentic". Got them for Fathers day and decided to install them today... First thing I noticed is only 2 wires instead of 4 so I do some research and here is what I find:

1. Early 427's had rectangular lights but some latter ones had round ones like FFR. Something to do with race rules of the day or so I read on a thread.

2. There are different models available from Finishline and Superformance that guys are using but they all seem to need some modification or else they are reported to be dim. Some guys have installed LED's, others have added an extra bulb and reflective material. Most have built boxes to weather proof them.

My suggestion is to do your research FIRST before you purchase. Lots of good info on this forum but I had no idea I needed to research this before I purchased. I hope this post informs someone before they take on a project they were not ready for.

It looks like I will be modifying mine most likely to a dual LED system but what I thought was an afternoon project may be put on the shelf till this comming winter when I have more time and patience.

Jerry

Plus they do not fit well against the light pads for the round lights. Many people modify the pad before paint.

I wanted the rectangular lights but same as you had to build the back. I cut out a new backing plate and welded on freeze plugs that the LED's would fit into. Maybe these pics will give you some ideas.

taillights

You could also go to speedway motors and buy 41=48 chev rectangular LED taillights and just bolt them in and they fit the taillight raised boss perfectly

The cobrax has predominently round or radiused contours. The round lights look better, and fit better.

Our cars are not COBxxxx.

Changing tail lights seems like a big waste of time to me.

Talking Turn signals

If you do decide to do the mod, you'll also need to re-wire so the lights can be both brake and turn signal. pm me if you need the circuit to do that.
