first injury while building

Had my first real injury while building a Roadster. I was using a right angle die grinder with a 2 inch drum sander. I guess I didnt get the drum tight eneough in the collet. It came out with such force that it gave me nearly a 2 inch gash on the top of my left hand. I have never felt pain like that before. I had about 3 minutes to wrap it up, close up the garage and yell to my wife before the pain kicked in. Really thought I was going to pass out.
My wife called 911 and the ambulance took me to the hospital. We thought that is must have broken some bones or worse.
The doctors took good care of it. They could see the tendons from my pinky finger and the next one over. They both were working fine. I was very lucky that I did not damage them. In the end I ended up with 9 stitches. Hopefully it will heal soon.

Hi Mike,
As your doctor I am giving you 10 days off to recover. It's a good time to walk away from a few projects and take your wife to the beach or something easy!!!

There is pain and then there is PAIN.

Your story made me hurt all over as it brought back a few memories I did not need to relive.

Heal quickly and well,

No joke -- die grinder rpm versus that appropriate for a drum sander can be what, 10X or more?

Speedy recovery!

glad it's stitched up wlel but I think the rcovery will be longer than you would like. Sounds to me like every time you try to grip something in that hand you will be popping the stiches. Like Mike says,go to the beach or something w/ your wife. Best wishes to you !

Wow Mike! A 2" drum sander in a slow cordless drill cuts fiberglass pretty quickly. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Get Well

Hi Mike Get well soon, take some time to heal and you will probably need some therapy for the hand.
We have all done something that we later realized we shouldn't have. I got my finger tip cut off in a , ready for this, a tomato grinder. When the paramedics showed up(we have an all white kitchen) they saw the tomato splatters from doing 5 bushels of tomatoes and thought I cut my whole arm off . Didn't seen funny then but it does now. Get better and go for the therapy it really helps.

I hope you didn't...but as Mikey found out unless you saw a trained Hand surgeon, you very well may not have gotten the best information. If I were you I would definitely see either an Orthopedic Hand Surgeon or a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who does Hand surgery (about half of them do as well) within the next 5-7 days just to be sure.

I hope you heal soon!

-Michael

Ouch indeed! You must be a really careful guy, as I know you've put together a few. My single roadster caused me more than one episode of yelling "Honey, some help please!"!

Take it easy for a while. Sometimes that's the important message for a busy guy.
