The Burnout Request...

I seem to be getting this request a lot these days. Most of the time it's just not appropriate given the time/place. If I did it every time it was requested I would be replacing my tires every year. Do you guys get this request a lot? How do you typically respond?

Yup! My response...I shake my head, look directly at the person, and say "Why?" I simply refuse to be part of anyone's circus act like some trained animal. Told the cops no also.

Don't see the need to do a burnout unless I find my self about to do a 1/4 mile drag. That's kinda like having a nice pen in your pocket and someone walks up to you and says, "Wow!! That's cool dude!!! Write a press release!" My response would be the same, "WHY?"

Nope. Just not the right thing (for me) to do. I will rev the engine and that will usually bring a big smile and/or a thumbs up. Safety first.

Yep, comes with owning one of these cars.
My usual response is to smile and tell them I can barely afford the insurance now. One more ticket and I'll have to park it! This is not true of course, but it seems to pacify most.
If I'm feeling ornery I'll rev the engine a bit like I'm going to.......and then just putt away!

I love to do burnouts... but on my own terms

The most I've done is give them a quick chirp with a small blip of the throttle at modest rev's. Sometimes "less" is more impressive.

In the process you show that you light the tires on fire if you wanted....but dont need to.

We have all probably seen vids of an axle that snaps coming off the line followed by an immediate 90 degree turn. I always refuse nicely!

Only time I've done it and not in the tracks burnout box is on this one particular cruise night in which they have a burnout area with water and a cop "policing" the event. Cars can drive around or partake. That is fun because it is part of the cruise tradition and my wife laughs so hard she just about wets her pants. But never for a moron egging me on. I usually just give the trottle a burp with the clutch in and they are happy.

Some people....

I have been asked many times to do burnouts...my typical responce includes comments like "Tires cost money"..."I have nothing to prove"..."I know what my car can do". My rural community has enough young Mustang owners who leave their tire marks at every intersection and parking lot in the town. I don't need to be put into the same class and become the "talk of the town" for the wrong reasons.

What they really want to see is not a burnout, but a crash...sorry not today.

At our local Cruise Night, before the Car Show, one person driving their Grand Dads street rod did a little throttle blip, the linkage stuck and he went on a wild ride for a couple blocks finally hitting another show car. He had "Big Eyes" and locked up front wheels and still accelerated out of control.

I'm with the "Just Pass It Off" crowd. Now let me see if I can live by that when I finally get my car on the road later this summer, it has been 10+ years in the making.

Regards, Rick.

Hi,
The guy who crashed the hot rod fits in with the Toyota Camry crashed. He had several options before the crash. Turn off the ignition, pop it in neutral are very safe alternatives to crashing.

BTW, I like the burnout pits at some car shows. Put on a pair of worn out tires, use the line lock and lite em up. I won a trophy for the best sounding engine in my Z-28 with a dry sump small block. I twisted it up to 7600 and was bouncing on the limiter (a little) in 2nd gear burnouts. I know, I'm crazy and immature... Oh well...

Steno, too funny!!
Maybe some of the younger folks here don't know/remember about the "goldfish on the seat" commercial yrs. back on tv. I get asked to do a burn out all the time(yesterday). I just smile, shake my head no & shrugg my shoulders--drive on---

Just to show you how stupid they can be... I drive my Cobra in the St pats parade every year ( Because it's green) I can't tell you how many jerks yell out, "Light em up!" right... with the Boy scouts marching right in front of me. Of course they usually have a beer in their hand.

You can't fix stupid

I've had Corvette and Camaro race cars and several Corvette street cars and I got the usual "What'll it do in the quarter" and "Light em up" or "Do a burnout and show us what ya got". My standard answer is "It's for road racing, not drag racing. When drag racers get to the end of the quarter and shut off, we get to keep out foot in it". I also used, "It's made to turn left and right, geared for top speed, not to burn the tires off in a straight line"

My dad used to have a saying, "Don't argue with idiots, from a distance people may not be able to tell you apart"

Ron

Great find Doug! That is hilarious. As for the burnout requests, I am sure it gets old after awhile, but seriously, if I was in a safe place with someone I knew, I would do it.
