Self cancelling turn signals and steering wheel placement
The Russ Thompson and North Racecars self-cancelling turn signal systems seem to be both very attractive and functional, with based on the pictures I've seen, Russ Thompson's unit having a bit more elegant/refined appearance when installed.
My concern with both is the set-back of the steering wheel from the dash. I tend to be on the "large side" of the population wight curve (OK - I could stand to loose 25 - 30 lbs and I'm working on it) as well as on the "tall side" at 6'2". I would not want the steering wheel too close to my chest (gut).
Can anyone help with some measurements .... e.g. distance from the back of the steering wheel to the dash face (not the body lip) for:
Russ Thompson system
North Racecars system
"stock" (Mk4) build
Many thanks
Lynn

If you can't use the Russ Thompson or North Racecar signal setup, you can still use a momentary L/R toggle and the Speedway switch. Blinks 3 times and turns off automatically.
I used this setup with my Breeze quick disconnect (that precluded the use of Russ' turn signal setup).
I have Russ Thompson's and it does not change the position of the steering wheel at all. It is an excellent piece. The only thing you have to change is the hole size in the dash. I will measure the distance for you on my car.

Where the back of the wheel mounts to the hub it is 3 3/4" to the dash and on the right side of the steering wheel from the back of the wheel to the dash it is 4 1/8". You send Russ your hub and he machines it to work with the rest of the parts in his system so the position of your steering wheel never changes. and there is also a switch on the end that you can use for high beams or for your horn.

I have the Russ Thompson one and it does move the wheel out a bit. I ended up cutting about an inch off the back of the tube on it and moved its mounting bracket and was able to slide it back tighter to the dash.

I installed Russ's turn signal setup a month so back on my MKI. Works great, but does move streeing wheel out/back some. I'm only about 5'6" (on a good day) so moving colum/steeringwheel back was no problem & actually helped.

I guess I would email Russ and ask him, because there was obviously a change. I don't know if mine is older or newer but it used my original hub and did not change the wheel placement. It would be best to just ask him.

I have Russ's turn signal setup on my Mk3. Works great and I highly recommend. I'm at work so can't give specific dimensions, but it didn't move the wheel out much, if any. Even with this setup, the wheel is relatively close to the dash in my opinion. I wouldn't want it any closer. I'm Mr. average 5'10" (on a good day) and everything about the car fits me just right.
I have used North Racing-Richard Oben's signal on the last three FFRs I built,,,and just ordered one for the new Mk4 I am currently building.
If I remember right, I think it does move the wheel about three inches closer to you,,,,,,,BUT that is a GOOD thing for me personally.
I am 6feet tall and have 36inch length jeans. I also weigh just at 200 pounds and having the wheel moved towards me is actually very comfortable as it frees up some room under the steering wheel for your thighs.
Of course what is comfy for me may not be for you......
I would sit in the car with the wheel in the stock location,,,then move it out a few inches to see if it is better/worse to your liking.

Because I cut the VW bent arm lever off and graft on a staight arm it moves the wheel back about 1/2", this can be shortend a bit more if you want. Richards system is real nice but I do not like the wheel moved back hince my design.
Hope this helps.
Lynn, you've been in my car. With my RT column I have 18" at the narrowest point from the seat to the steering wheel (about 6" up from the seat cushion). There is 3-1/2" from the dash to the front of the center section of the wheel. With my petite physique I have plenty of room. Im confident you will too.
I just looked at both websites to try to determine which was installed in my car by the original owner. I must have the north Racecars unit and I don't think you would like it.It definately moves the wheel closer to the driver. On the right side of the wheel (measured there so i wouldn't be in to the curved part of the dash) the wheel is 5.5 inches from the dash. That is from dash to forward surface of the wheel where you fingers are.RT's unit looks better from to me.
