yes to both...only thing I can see is that head went down cocked off on the guide pins... the head gasket is at .050 laying on my table without a mark on it...
Going to take it to yet another shop tomorrow and have it checked to make sure it's straight, bolt another head gasket on and see if it will seal.
That is got to be the strangest fail I have ever seen in a head gasket installation. I have a hard time understanding what was keeping the head from seating. I agree that with you deduction of the head being cocked, but what held it cocked even after the head bolts were torque? I am looking forward to the explanation on how a head could be put on that way, Any of you engine Pros got an idea, given that there was no foreign matter holding the head off of the block and that the head gasket did not have any compression marks on it from being used.

What the hell?? If they used the wrong head gasket, I wonder what else?? Erik, if you don't get it going in the next few days, I have an empty seat.. Come on to LCS anyway.. I'll even let you drive some......... maybe....... :0)

thanks for offer...I think I am going to pass this year again.
Note to self: Never hire Ray Charles to build an engine.

I know mistakes happen, but I am really disappointed with the level of product here...these are supposed to be "pros"... oh well...it's just more time...at least it isn't that difficult to fix....should be an interesting call to th engine shop this morning though....

yep! that link is EXACTLY my issue...Yeah I would have thought in the bright light of the engine shop, with the engine sitting on the engine stand, one might easily see this...I guess not...
THe engine shop was very embarrassed. They are buying me new head gaskets and intake gaskets and I will have them tomorrow....
now I have to figure out if I can pull the head off from the driver's side...the 351W is pretty close to the foot box... I may just pull the mounts off the motor and "slide" the motor over.
Wow on using the non-svo gaskets and the worst gaskets for boost on top of that.
lucky again, bc had they sealed, you would just be replacing them again in a month.
One thought on the #8 rod bearing failure... possible you were getting detonation in the #8 which has a nasty tendency to run leaner than the rest? Detonation is a killer on rod bearings. Doesn't take much and once they start to go... it's down hill in a hurry.
Good luck getting everything figured out. Fel-pro makes an MLS gasket, part number ends in SD4. Very solid gasket for boosted applications and they come precoated to ensure sealing on surfaces as rough as 50 RMA.
Ryan, the number 8 runs leaner when using a carb with the Victor Jr manifold, not with port injection. The reason to use those gaskets is they are the safety valve and would have let go long before detonation beat the rod bearings out of the motor. BTW the motor had over 5000 miles of being run hard at over 550 RWHP without a head gasket failure with these gaskets.

I still have some clean up work to do. Get the wheels back on it. Get the wideband hooked up and, nut and bolt everything i touched.
First start..somewhat of a fail....forgot I didn't tighten down the the motor mounts, forgot to hook up the alternator, and the water temp sensor to the computer....
Second start...more like it... timing check seems good. I will have to verify with the computer this weekend. Brought it up to temp and now have to wait to let it cool all the way down and check the fluids.
Thanks man...btw did I mention the crank trigger setup is sweet...bolt everything back the way it was and it fires right up...well almost...it helps when all the wiring to the computer is hooked up.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, oh now that's funny! I got a $100 that says the heads will be on by Wednesday at the latest...
