Note that the announcer pointed out that the original cobra was on hard street tires. No doubt the FFR was on sticky buns. As we all know, tires are just about everything, so it wasn't really a fair contest.
Will have to rewatch it, but original with 15" tires vs FFR with 17s...that is about all you need to know. Still, that for 1/20th the money (assuming an original goes for $1M) you can build a car in the spirit of the original that can perform at a similar level, is incredible.
Keep in mind as well, the FFR was not being driven by a professional funny car driver, it was none other then Dave Smith, who I think was just having too much fun to let anyone else do it.
I thought the show was pretty good, as for it being an ad for Factory Five, that is pretty much in par with the other shows on Power Block. They have okay entertainment value though especially on a Saturday morning.
Bill, that video is unreal, talk about an oh wow moment.

Crazy thing...these cars look so good I have a brand new Mark IV in my garage and I still found myself saying, "I want one of those." That's how good these things look. Way better than the originals.
It probably WAS an FFR commercial. They are giving one away, so getting a 30 minute show was probably part of the deal.
Of course similar tires would have made a more fair test. But, the original had a big block and a professional driver for the drag. I don't think matching the tires would have had the original win in any catagory, it would have brought them closer though. There was some big time body roll in the autocross, and rear lockup on braking for the original.
But in all fairness, they didn't have very good tires in the 60s, so maybe the original with not so sticky tires was in the spirit of "then and now".
I thought it was interesting that in bringing out their serious hardware, FFR brought a 3-link. A feel good for me if nothing else.
I liked the fact that there was no Cobra or "old man" bashing. Well done, Muscle Car and FFR.
For you guys that don't normally watch the show. It is actually one of the few shows left that shows you how to actually do something. They give fabrication, painting, and other tips. At least you can learn a little something.

It's just a pile of parts until you have the first start. Then it is a car!!
Got to see the show on Sunday. Great comparison. I agree, a new FFR for around or under 35K, built in your garage, that can even compete with an original like that let alone beat it….. enough said…… However, I would like to have seen the FFR go out against the original the way it came in the building before they did the upgrades to it. I would also like to see a 5.0 fuel injected in that mix as well since it seems like that is the way a lot of these get built. That would be entertainment….and I think a good 5.0 in the right hands could at least make them set up and take notice………..
I know this thread is a few months old, but I just don't get how that Coyote based FFR could be 500 hp and run that low of mph in the 1/4 mile. A base model 2012 Corvette (not Z06) runs 12's in the 1/4 at 117 mph and (sorry to say) would probably have spanked both cars.
Is it just me or do our cars look better than the original?
Jeff
YES
even a MK3 like mine with a perky butt and upright rollbar which some don't like - i say ours look much better.
the front opening, the fender flares, the stance, the way the wheels fit inside the body, the hood scoop shape and size, pretty much everything looks better.
add to that a few of our own personal touches and BAZINGA - FFR's are the hands down winner, except for history and value.
(and smell, i'm woking on my "old car smell" tree air freshener as we speak.)
the 1/4 mile times are a little off. The guy said Dave had a heck of a time getting traction down the the track. If you get out of it for a split second, the trap speed will be significantly less.
I could run 12.8 with my stock donor and a 100 shot. Before my car became a total RR machine, I did run 11.8, 122ish with 475 fwhp 347 and DRs. The coyote motor has balls, Ive seen boss mustangs really fly on the road race track.

Trevor, I disagree. If you have traction problems your ET will suffer, but trap speed not nearly as much. Your trap speed is the best indicator of how much power you're making. The main exception to that would be if you never hooked up the entire length of the track. I've ran mid 11's at 144 and close to 10 flat at 144. The only difference was how much traction I had, none of the runs being optimal.
Trap is an indicator of hp when all else is equal. The ET goes up and trap stays the same if the first 60 ft traction sucks. If you get out of it mid way, there is no more acceleration; thus reducing your speed at a time when the air drag is very high. Unless the car doesn't accelerate the ladder half of the track, then your trap speed wouldn't change.
Regardless, the times were pretty bad. Something wasn't right. I looked at my old time slips from years ago when I drag raced.
basically stock 302, street tires 13 sec
stock 302, DRs 12.7-8 sec
stock 302 100shot, Drs, low to mid 12s
stock 302, 200 shot, Drs, high 11s to 12 flat
here is an incident that shows trap speed vs. time
stock 302, 250 shot, DRs, nitrous explosion at the 1/8, basically rolled through the traps. 102 mph trap speed, 11.99 ET
