Completely hidden under dash/courtesy lighting for $17

Hi guys,

I was trying to figure out how to do under dash and trunk lighting that didn't show the actual light itself. I came up with what I believe is a pretty good solution.

I went to Autozone and bought some of that "wassap homie" flexible LED light strip and got creative. There are several kinds available including "edge lit" which, as it sounds, eminiates light from the edges of the self adhering strips instead of the face. I'll be using "face lit" for the trunk.

The LED lights are really quite bright and at night have a great soft light appearance in this application.

I installed the thin LED strips between the under dash panel and the lip of the dash. I spaced the two with washers which allowed just enough room for the flexible strip to slide in. I'll adhere the strips once I have the dash and under panel covered, until then they are held in place by a little bit of friction and aren't going anywhere. The strips come in a package set up with a battery so you can see how they operate in the store. You clip the wires and hard wire them to a 5 amp fuse and switch. I'll let the video below show what I came up with.

Pay no attention to the tranny tunnel cover... it is a mock up for my real cover to be installed soon.

Very nice, thanks for sharing! Are you able to use them with a dimmer? Do they put out enough light to need that or is just soft accent lighting?

I haven't tried them with the dimmer but I assume they'd work with the Speed Hut dimmer kit like the gauges do.

There is no need to dim in my opinion, the ones I installed are 12" long each and they provide a nice amount of light but not harsh. I turned them on in the pitch dark and they were quite nice and have a soft glow. I could imagine driving with them on if I wanted to see a map or something without it being distracting at all.

Nice work. Gotta ask though, do the bottom dash covers come with the kit or is that something you fab up? I have my kit, but did not notice that part during inventory. Then again, my wife and kids did most of it.

Ha, Ha. If you are asking that now, I sense you will be asking that often throughout the build. Most of these nice touches have to be fabbed.

Yep, as Don mentioned... ya have to fab that up if you want one. Many do to clean things up a bit and mount other accessories you don't want on the dash itself.

Thanks for posting up Darren. Ive been looking for different options. Are these lights DC or battery. Not sure because of the packaging that you show.

You hard wire them to a 12 volt source. The package has a battery so you can test them in the store.

Good stuff Darren.

Company called StreetGlow Home - StreetGlow Inc. - Performance LED and Neon Lighting Accessories makes them in 3" 6" 9" 12" and in 5 different colors. The 6" have 9 LEDS, pretty bright, and cover a lot of space. They make really good accent lights on the sailboat and draw very little power. You can pretty much stick them on anywhere, and they come with a nice long power tail on them.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't put a dimmer on them.

There is another one out there that is more severe duty that we use for desk lighting. It was 40 LED's is waterproof and draws .11 amps. Two of them will light up most of the deck when mounted 15 feet up on the spreader.

I've been buying a lot of LED tape from this guy on ebay -

eBay My World - hkesupplier

ships fast, everything works etc. I highly recommend him.

And yes, I taped the stripes on my FFR with the RGB tape for Christmas, front to back. It looks great just lit, but then of course I can make it flash, fade, cycle etc.

I know it's "Not proper!" but hell, Christmas spirit etc.

X2 on Mike's under dash support. I just installed mine last week and it truly makes a huge difference. This is a must have for these cars.

FYI - Regarding the dimmer - my generic Ron Francis harness (not from FFR) uses a GM style headlight switch. This switch has the dimmer function for the gauge lights but the interior light switch is just off/on. For the interior lights, this switch completes the ground. In other words, you need to run power directly to the lights and then connect the ground wire to the switch. When you rotate the knob counter-clockwise, it grounds the lights and turns them on.

The reason I asked about dimming is LEDs, from what I have read are different than normal lights. You can not just use a traditional dimmer on compact flourscents and LEDs. I do not know the detail, guess I will have to dig into that, I just know it is not the same as incandescent lighting.

Rich the ebay link that rockpool supplied also sells dimmers and power supplies. Even a dimmer with a remote. That would be pretty cool, walk up to your car at night and hit the remote to light up the interior.

I'm gunna have this, but hell no, i'm not going to carry an extra remote for interior lights.

Instead, ISIS is going to throw on the interior lights when i unsecure the car. I'm going to have far too much fun with all that stuff. I'm definitely up for the sidelit LEDs though, in addition to
these guys these guys
which will be available from built in USB ports, for map-reading and whatnot. USB port in the engine bay too?

Now if ISIS would just deliver my group-buy as a christmas present, i'd be all set!

I did the same thing with a 3 ft long strip of LED lights. I put one under the dash panel and one to the bottom of the 3/4" trunk hoop. Here's a video.

While Xmas shopping with the Mrs. yesterday I found these at Wally-World, same price too. Found only blue at first, but a package of white was at the end of the hanging hook. Guess what my project will be Christmas day? LOL

Thanks for the heads up! I might get these for the '68 Mustang project too and control it with the ISIS we're doing!

Very creative on the dash hoop...I'm liking that. Here's my fab'd under-dash panel, with LED lights from Prep Boys. Four lights, with four LEDs per.
