My car is just about ready to get painted and I'm torn between two paint schemes. I was dead set on satin black with satin black wheels, and red calipers. However, I'm now considering an Audi Grey Nimbus Pearl, glosssy black wheels and yellow calipers as seen the the Lambo photo I've attached. In either case there will be no chrome on the car. The windshield, hinges, etc, will be powdercoated either glossy or satin black.
At the moment I'm leaning toward the "grey" scheme as I have yet to see in on a roadster.
I think I like your first idea of the satin black with black wheels and red calipers. More sinister.

Hmmm, predictably I'll say satin black (with black calipers too; I don't get the bright colored caliper thing but that's OK---lot's of people don't get the satin thing).
Here's a thought...how some combining some of both and doing the dark grey in satin:
I LOVE Jeff's car. Looks mean!!! Just wanted to say that.
I would do grey with satin black stripes, red pin stripe and red calipers. Satin black roll bar, wheels, jacks an trim. Black ceramic pipes. Make the stripes as wide as you can so you can get that mean look on it.
What do you think?

My vote: Audi Grey Nimbus Pearl, glossy black wheels, or flat back wheels.
Classy-Mean-Look.
I've had many friends do the satin black look on streetrods only to find out it's a major pain to keep clean satin looking without shiny spots standing out. Even satin black stripes on a hood can be a pain from natural oil on your hands.
I'm thinking they end up using window cleaner on their car before and after shows to get the oil from fingerprints and the road off. Not to mention if they spill a bit of gas during a fill.
I'm not sure either if bugs and bird-bombs are harder to get off a satin finish. In theory they would be... Maybe other satin owners could answer that.

IMO I would get tired of the satin as the main paint scheme. For accents such as roll bar, pipes, and anything chrome may look good. Just wonder if satin would be too Rat Rodish? Is that a word? But in the end it is your vision so do what works best for you! Good luck!!!

washing this car is an absolute pain in the arse. if you are considering a satin color, go for it! i am sure you can get away with wiping it down every now an then.
some guys say they just use quick detailer every now and then, but for my dark color, it left streaks, and i'd even say put micro-scratches in the paint.
if i ever build another, i would consider satin for just this reason.
Flat and satin paints always look like an incomplete paint job to me.
Almost as if the owner ran out of money, time, or desire to finish it.
I know that the effect is different, and not the same old boring paints that we have lived with for generations, but I see them as a fad that will eventually join the flourescent paints that we all remember.
Troy just to make sure you get the colors correct on the photo of the backdraft cobra posted by Mr. Ugly, it is black with grey stripes and red pin. The black is a special black the turns grey in the sun but dark black in low light. I have attache a photo of the same cobra at Metal-morphous inc right after it was finished being painted there.
Although you don't see them in the photo above that is what mine is. As EdwardR mentions about the Backdraft mine also changes in different lighting. It's not paint at all but rather PPG DP90 epoxy which is more of a matte finish rather than true "dead" flat, so there is a certain amount of sheen to it. In some conditions it kind of glows. Stripes are a full gloss single stage.
Here's some pics that show the finish, how the sheen and color varies as well as how the stripes show or hide depending upon lighting and viewing angle.
As far as care sometimes just water, other times when it's grimy or covered with bugs and/or rubber I'll break out the hose and a bucket of water with a squirt of dish soap. For a quick clean up a spray bottle with a mix of Simple Green and water does the trick. In all cases I just dry it off with an old cloth towell. Yeah, oily fingers and sweaty arms rested on top of the door leave marks, just like they do on a shiny finish---they wipe off exactly the same too with a damp rag or detail spray!

Hey its your car make yourself happy but....sorry its true it looks unfinished to most of us. What happened, why don't you paint it?
There was a article recently in Hot Rod I think where they painted a Camaro with a $40.00 gallon of flat Rusoleum. OMG, its not even a catalyzed material almost any solvent will damage it and the satin look. Bad idea for a magazine article to me. If you have to go for the Rat Rod look at least use good quality paint. Simulated rust on a fiberglass body that is a replica of a aluminum body is my favorite thing. You see some of that on the Rat Rods.

The Backdraft paint is very cool. More than likely I will stay away from stripes, satin seems to be a popular choice over the Audi grey. The satin does look unfinished as we may accustomed to polished and shiny paint. However, the satin looks sinister and mean. The frozen black BMW has for the new M3 definitely gives off a differrent aura than a shiny red.
So, if I go with satin black, what are thoughts on glossy vs. Satin black on my now chrome trim pieces and roll bars?
Wow this worked out nice,,, This was just finished at metal-morphous inc and its the same color combo as the backdraft that was painted there, the only difference is that one has a little more shine than the other This really shows how sensitive the base coats are to the top coat
