Wow this worked out nice,,, This was just finished at metal-morphous inc and its the same color combo as the backdraft that was painted there, the only difference is that one has a little more shine than the other This really shows how sensitive the base coats are to the top coat
Shiny side up greasy side down.. If you don't have a shiny side the car may roll over easier..

Wow, that's cool to have the two options together.
Really shows how the clear-coat adds depth to a paint-job.
Flat, satin has it's qualities also. I would expect you'd have less people touching. It seems the main reason people touch my mirror finish is to feel how smooth it is or like it's water with depth to stick a finger into. Like their eyes are deceiving them.

What a beautiful combination. Can anyone share the color codes for the shiny one. Including the red. Would love to see more pictures of this one.
Looking for the Color Codes for the Top ( Shiny ) Paint Scheme
Got a couple of PM's sent but I am still having a hard time finding for photos and paint codes.
Thank you for any info.
Greatly Appreciated

My vote is for grey. I have a satin black 50 Ford and while it looks good - especially when the lights hits it a certain way - I wish I would have gone shiny almost every time I take it out for a cruise. Plus, shiny is more classy, satin takes some of the aura away in my opinion.
There was a article recently in Hot Rod I think where they painted a Camaro with a $40.00 gallon of flat Rusoleum. OMG, its not even a catalyzed material almost any solvent will damage it and the satin look. Bad idea for a magazine article to me.
Darn,
Ever since that Hot Rod article came out (I cut it out and saved it), this was my plan (with a 15 year old Wagner electric spray gun).
Could you explain the issue of non catalyzed material to a paint noobee?
Also, downside of using the Wagner, if any. Not looking for a show job by any means, but don't want to be a slob. Autocrosses, track days, and some touring.
Thanks

Really baffles me how someone can have a $30K-$40K automobile and then put on the equivalent of a rattle can finish. My vote is for anything glossy. Bob

That's the beauty of this process; to each his own. I actually like the black satin look
Still interested in answers to the catalyzer and Wagner sprayer questions
I have neither a compressor nor a spray booth, and am led to believe a professionally done "shiny" paint job costs thousands of dollars. Would rather save the bucks, at least initially, and wail on the car with no fear. "Form follows function".

No one says you have to use Krylon on the car. You can use Standox with a flattened clear if you want. That a way it still has a clear on the car, and it washes like any other. If you just shoot a primer it'll chaulk on you and look like crap.
I've had many flat vehicles being a hotrodder....traditional never goes out of style.
Be careful about painting the car in non-traditional color schemes if you think you might want to sell the car down the road. If it's too "unique", you may have to find a very unique buyer.
I like the satin black look but you have to go all the way; otherwise it just looks like an unfinished car.
By the way, you can get paint like this with a roller brush and wet sanding:
I vote for Satin black, and only red calipers if they are aftermarket/high performance (why draw attention to ordinary stock brakes?)
I plan on going with a Satin finish (thats right, I said "finish" )
JKleiner, do you have much trouble keeping your car clean?
I'm looking for a "low maintenance" theme for my roadster body - not much cleaning/polishing = more driving
I want a really dark deep black (like a black hole), that has a bit of a luster, too.
None of that chalky/primer look, but not too glossy either (A lil' less shiny than the gelcoat).
I'm thinking that clear coat might solve all of this.....or destroy the effect.
Eldrik, I own 4 black cars and my new car will be black as well. I certainly didn't mean to disparage the "satin finish" idea with my comment about being unfinished. What I mean is, doing things like Troy is describing with the hinges, windshield frame, latches, etc I think is necessary to tie the entire look together. The satin finish is a "no-nonsense" look which I don't think lends itself as well to chrome pieces. I think things need to look simple, mechanical, "non-shiny", raw, etc. For instance, I don't think a chrome windshield frame works as well with the look; however, I think an "unfinished" raw metal / steel frame would. Or a satin black frame. I'd make the roll bar satin black, roll bar trim rings brushed aluminum or satin black, black sidepipes, etc.
Those are just the sorts of things I'd think about and do.
Damn, somebody knows how to lay on clear. That's amazing.
Not to mention the block sanding before hand.
Oh, and if you are still taking votes I'd pick the Lambo gray with some clearcoat.

I am in the "I don't get it" camp with satin paint. I think it will be like the purple cars that were in style for about two years, then the owners smacked their foreheads and said "what was I thinking?"
I don't get black wheels either. Or especially fake painted on rust for a rat rod. I have never been in on fads. Especially on cars.
Do what you think looks cool. But, think of the life of a paint job and if it will look cool down the road.

I like the grey better. If you want flat or satin, do it w/ the clear coat. As I understand it there is an additive called 'flattener' that you mix into the clear. How much is mixed determines how flat it is. Like interior house paint in flat, eggshell, satin, etc. If you tire of it in a few years it could just be re-cleared in gloss.

EdwardR,
Is there any chance we could get the paint codes you used?
I was considering (and still am) the exact same idea except substituding your ultra-dark-black-ish grey with indigo ink, but that's pretty hot too, and I may consider it. Im building a coupe, and with some proper body modifications, tinted glass, and old-school wheels, I think that would look MEAN
Keep in mind.....if you have 17" wheels the caliper color shows better. 15" is a bit hidden! I have the pics on my post on "wrapping cars". I am now getting the car completely repainted with Batboy and have DEEP black with Black stripes pretty faint.......and whole car is powdercoated,,,no chrome! Calipers are RED.
