Trunk carpet, what I learned this weekend.

I have been searching for indoor/outdoor/marine carpet (grey) to install in the trunk of my FFR. I had gotten the sample squares from Home Depot and Lowes and they looked very similar to me, and were about the same price. Since I was closer to Lowes on Saturday, I purchased some of their ST103 Stratos/830 Gray #97913. Warning: do not purchase this stuff.

While rolling out the carpet on the tailgate of my pickup, I accidently overturned my cup of coffee on a corner of the carpet. In trying to sop up the coffee with a towel, I noticed the carpet was wrinkling up and the backing was coming off. Not a good sign for outdoor carpet. Thinking the issue was my hot coffee, I poured plain water on another corner of a sample. Same result, the backing could be easily rubbed off. I guess it would be OK if you never got the stuff wet.

I returned the carpet to Lowes and tested my samples from Home Depot (Beaulieu Perfection Gray, sku 779514) the same way. The backing was not affected by water. I purchased some of this product, and am glad I learned a lesson - all outdoor carpet is not the same. Not sure if I am being anal, or not, but don't think I want carpet in my car that is dissolved by water.

Will comment later in separate post on my experience with upgraded interior carpet after I hear from Perfectfit-McDonald on the premium carpet I got from them.

Ralph.

Wow.....I'm almost to the same point...thanks! Did Lowes have anything to say about it?

Return desk as Lowes didn't comment at all. Just gave me my money back.

Shop carefully. Ralph

Rich, Lowes had quite a selection of carpet. You may not have the same sku number I got. I don't plan to pour coffee or water in my trunk either, but who knows what might happen.
