Quick question for you, I'm expecting mine in January...
Do they have a dolly of some kind with wheels to roll the car into your garage? Then at that point you can raise it up on some jack stands? Is that basically how the process goes?
Congratulations! Nice to know there is another local builder. I started building mine in Huntersville in 2002 and I am hoping to finish it in 2011 in Denver (NC).
Adrian,
You can make a dolley or pick up 2 furniture dollies from Harbor Freight, that is what I did. I kept the chassis on them untill the last minute. That way I could slide the chassis under the raised body buck and only take up one bay in the garage. http://www.harborfreight.com/1000-lb...lly-38970.html

Stewart trans has a cart with big wheels that will get it in your garage for you. My garage is in an alley, so Scotty parked the truck in the front and pulled the frame around back and up the hill. He made it look pretty simple, and seemed more than happy to do it as it made getting the truck out of the neighborhood easier. Once the cart was in the garage he lifted the frame up and I slid in the jackstands. Overall it was hassle free and quick to get done. Ill leave it like this until I find out whether or not I have enough room to get my daily driver back in the garage. I think I have the smallest 2 car garage in the US!
Adrian,
They bring it into your garage on a 4 wheel dolly and you can put it on Jack stands so they can get their dolly out. They were great! Very helpful.
Adrian, they crane it off the truck and onto a dolly that they roll up to your garage. I had a friend and the jack stands waiting and the three of us set the car on them. Scott also wheeled in all the boxes. Great experience.
You can see the dolly under the car in this pic. (Shameless way to re live delivery day )

Friends and people at work keep asking how many total parts there are with the build, so Im going to keep track as I go. So far I am going with NA as I haven't finished the teardown process yet.
I was able to put together a body buck last night, going with a short one I can wheel out of the garage when working on the car.
Akpingel - Congrats! Where are you located in Huntersville?
I'm in process on a MK3 - however I may be in for a move in my near future . . .
Have you met Travis Blazer at Blazer Racing/Levy East yet? He is a good guy and a great resource to have that is local to the area. His shop is on Ramah Church Road.
PS - I hung my body from the ceiling of the garage and it has worked out extremely well. No distractions to go start working on the body and no need to roll it in or out everytime I work on the car.
Hi, I have not met Travis yet, but I pass through that area every once in a while. I am in the Skybrook neighborhood feel free to stop by if you have any pointers! Are you leaving the area?
I was/am considering hanging my body buck from the roof. The biggest issue for me will be that it will block my main light source as well as the attic. Maybe it will fit above the garage door... I need to get out there and measure it.

NC weather is rough on bare aluminum. You may want to protect it until you decide how you are going to finish it. Mine developed some surface flaws sittting in the garage over the summer months.

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to go with Sharkhide on exposed surfaces? I think I will like the bare aluminum look. Would you recommend covering all panels? Also, I almost cut myself several times last night removing panels due to burrs. how does everyone handle this? Just a simple de-burr'er I suppose.
I've not used the shark hide product but the kit aluminum is bare and will degrade if you don't put something on it. Acetone will remove the metal marking. I was going to polish mine and forum advice was you can't maintain it once built. I went with a scotchbrite finish and clearcoat. I'm not sure that will hold up over time. I looked at some CSX car's at Shelby's shop in Vegas and the SF CSX cars come with sheetmetal about half sanded and left bare. That may stay that way a while in Nevada but not NC. I'll undercoat or put bedliner on wheel wells and underneath. Drill all the holes before doing any reviting so you can cleanout the drill scraps. You won't believe how much gets between the panels and the frame.
You may as well get ready for some cuts , scrapes and bumped noggins. The Gas tank area is out to get you from day one. Put the plastic caps on the 3/4 tubes before rolling under on a creeper....

Carbon,
That's what I did.
After nearly 3 years and 10K miles a wipe with some Quick Detailer to remove the dust & grime makes them look like the day I installed them. Like you mention, I did rubberized undercoating on panels that are not visible such as the footbox side as seen above. Scratch those up with some 80 or 100 to give a good tooth for the undercoating to hold onto.
I work for Carolina Speed & Custom in Denver NC. We should receive a MKIV just after the first of the year, we are building it for a customer. This is the third one we have built, and I still get excited about the next one. Let me know when you need an extra set of hands.

Glad its done well for you. I have a gray cloud over my head and if it can give a problem it will happen with me. If it fails after the body is on I'll deal with and roll on. I have still thoughts about a stainless firewall all polished up... Thinking can be such a problem....

Did you guys build this car? This was taken down at Charlotte Motor Speedway at the October show. I saw this car and ordered my kit the following Monday.

Started getting the front end together. I am waiting on a set of 94 spindles I got off ebay. With that, I am using the top mounting points for the upper A arm.
Any opinions on these lower control arm gaps? I havent tightened everything up yet, so I am not sure if I will get some binding.
Lastly, Do I need a washer here? There was one in the bag, but I wont be able to get the cotter pin in without some problems Cobra-0146 by akpingel, on Flickr
Welcome! It's nice to see another MK4 in NC! Don't worry about the gaps, everything will seat properly once you tourque to required specs. Not sure on the washers but you want to make sure how ever you install that the cotter pin will be fit correctly to do it's job.
Good luck!

Yep,
I started the kit, got it to a roller, then Tommy Pike & his boys finished it at the Autofair. We will have our third kit in-house at the end of this week
Made some progress this weekend. I noticed that the pedal box front is different than what was in the build manual. Cobra-0157 by akpingel
Steering rack in... still debating whether or not to get offset bushings. My offset is .5 inches which is lower than what I have read from others... opinions?
Also, I finally received my 94 spindles and was able to clean them up. Unfortunately I do not have the bolts needed to get them installed, so that will have to wait until next weekend.

I may have some more action shots of it going through the autocross course, but nothing up close.
Ordered offset bushings today. Im also thinking about painting the aluminum panels after all. The sharkhide seems good enough, but the scratches the panels from handling are starting to get to me. Nothing's riveted in yet so I have some time to think about it.
Next step is to trim up the over-sized tie rods. New problem also: the angle of the driver's side tie rod seems way off. I dont think its the adjustment of the upper A arm, but it might be that I dont have the steering rack parallel now because the bushings arent quite right? Once I get some time back in the garage I will work on these, and probably start on some of the sheet metal.
