trunk mounted stereo ideas/pictures

I have decided to use a marine remote for my stereo and mount that to the dash to save space and avoid havng the stereo stolen (I come from an age where that was popular-not sure if it is anymore). I plan on doing the rear cockpt wall glove box and I am looking for some ideas as to where to mount the stereo unit. Since I won't need to access it often was thinking of mountng it on top of the cockpit wall glove box and face it towards the rear.

Any ideas/comments/success stories/pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Steven,

Here's a link to the way I set my stereo up. I had the same concerns as you do, as far as theft. It all works just fine, although the sound, with the speakers firing through carpet is not too great.

IR repeater and stereo install, w/PICS

Chris.

Steve,

I just went with an amplifier in the trunk, two big Polk marine-grade speakers in the rear cockpit bulkhead, and a line-in connector form my iPod.

Far less complicated, assures I have the tunes I want, electronics are hidden, and no antenna to mess with. What's not to love?

I plan to use it at the drive-ins and at car shows while sitting around. Exhaust is too loud (and beautiful) to even attempt any tunes while in motion...

HTH,
Sherrell

Steve,

It sounds like you want a setup similar to mine. I've got a Sony marine receiver in the trunk mounted in a plastic box that I purchased from Crutchfield. I've got the remote controller mounted on my transmission tunnel. I'm also running a Sony four channel amp with four Infinity speakers. (Two in the rear bulkhead and two in the kick panels.)

Here's some pics:

I've been thinking lately that I'm going to pull my head unit out. All I ever do is listen to my iPod and I can run it right to my amp.

I mounted a Hiddden Audio verticle in the very forward ceter location of the trunk It uses a RF ( Radio Frequency) remote, not the traditional IR (Infer Red) remote. I have driven the car 2600 miles since late June and I have not even thought about a radio. The pipes sing to me. I put 350 miles on it last week just looking at fall foliage "No Radio".

Chris,

Your set-up is close to what I was planning. I may expose the speakers rather than putting them behind the carpet for the reason you mentioned.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Steven,

If you do a similar setup to mine, and you plan a radio, do something different with the antenna. Mine stinks, it's worthless.

Chris.

I plan on using a rubber marine antenna. I put a new system on the boat and got the marine antenna and it works great and is only about a foot long so it is easy to hide.

There are still some radio stations/programs I enjoy so I am doing the stereo with an iPod Jack.
