Well radio and wipers or no radio and wipers, this build is going to be outstanding. Have you thought about paint yet? I might have to make a trip to see my relatives soon just so I have a legit excuse to see your shop.

Wow - the standard of build quality that's going into these cars just keeps getting higher and higher. Very impressive work.
Thanks much. I'm just trying to stay in your (and some of the other great builders here) wake Howard.
Your build/car sets a very, very high bar (that I'm not likely to reach).

Thanks. I'm on the fence regarding color.
We're having our first baby in early July, so the F5 might be going to paint sooner than I anticipated if I can get it wrapped up and sorted by then. If not, she won't see paint til late next Fall/Winter.
Wait, you live in MN. Are you nuts for not getting wipers? Even in the summer (the only time you'll be able to drive it) you get some pretty bad rains all of a sudden. Just jibing you. But I would give some serious thought to the wipers.
What color choices are you thinking about?

Rain X brother!
White/Orange/Black/Charcoal in no particular order.

I finally got around to cutting out an access panel to the driver's (in)side footbox.
Because I didn't feel like trying to bend the same contour into the patch panel, I cheated a bit and had Factory Five send me another inside/top footbox panel that I cut the crust off, mocked it up over the top of the original one, and started cutting.
I made it larger than most do, but I reviewed my original body-on pics and determined (thought) I could get away with this size. I think the top/forward one might be kind of tight, but the others should be OK. (famous last words).
I'm planning to use a cork gasket on the underside of the patch panel and attach with 3/16" hex head machine screws/rubber washers after I tap the aluminum.
(Safety net: I can reach the upper/back one from underneath).
Nice! I've been thinking of what I'd do when I get to that stage. Do you need to have the access cover go that far back?

Hi Joe. No, you don't. I went with the bigger is better theme. I thought to give myself as much 'hand-space' as possible. And, to me, it looked more symmetrical.

Thanks Martin.. You are far too kind. Just trying to keep up with the big boys.
Budget?! What's that?

Thanks.
The thing that I am stuck on is the dash. I've seen Casey's stuff - very neat.
I want to do something cool and was considering a carbon dash, but I think they might be too shiny for my tastes.
Could come down to a black vinyl 'traditional' dash, black gauges, black wheel, do you see a theme here?
Oh, and I cut the panels up with this and trimmed them with about an hour of file work
HIRISC, I did mine like yours and could not reach the back one. Upper left in your first picture. I had to put a piece in there so the cover would slip under it and use the other 3 holes to hold it down. I'll see if I have a pic of it.

Hi Mike.
I saw your post/pic when I was researching it.. I liked your solution.
I'm hoping I'll be able to reach the hex-head. Certainly will be snug based on my measurements.
Worst case is I go in from the bottom - plenty of room looking up at that from the inside of the box.
Thanks. I'm paralyzed by indecision on the dash type and gauge type. I'm getting there.
I'm testing fitting Kirkey low back vintage racing seats later this week (I need/want the leg room and want to sit lower than the factory seats allow).
I'll have a couple unique elements, but nothing crazy.
Mid-shift, no radio, no heat, no wipers.
All Business
Do the low-back or high back kirkey seats get you the most legroom? I'm a tall guy - worried about the same once I order my kit.

That's what I've read.. They are very thin.
Summit just kicked one to me from Ohio (literally - shipped without a box - goofballs). /rant
Pic of my bare Kirkey seat - seatcover/foam is extra and a link immediately below to an old thread showing these seats in a Mk.2/3.
I like retaining the vintage look, providing more leg room while letting me sit further 'down' into the car. Not for everyone.
They come in 15", 16", 17", 18" widths.. I'm trying a 17" with the cover/padding tomorrow and will report back. I'm 6'0 and 200lbs - 35" waist (well, more often than not).
Nice looking build. Looks like you're having fun. If you're worried about reaching that back screw on your footbox access panel, you might take a look at this link. It shows the way I fastened the top of mine, eliminating the problem of the upper screw.
I did something very similar although for the cover I laminated 3 plys of aluminum with the middle ply 1" smaller at the back and top corner. It slides over and under the footbox top panel and then you screw the front down with one or two rivnuts. I haven't decided on the number yet.
Worked out well. I can get you a picture of the cover tomorrow morning if you want to see what I did with that.

Chris, I have the same seats. I tried them on the floor and also propped up on a couple of 2x4's and being up just that 1 1/2" seem to make a difference in how they felt. Are you planning to use the seat mounts from Kirkey? I'll still in the air about how I am going to mount them but maybe that 2x4x1/4" aluminum angle you used for the reservoirs would work for the seat mounts. When you see a picture of the Kirkey mounts you will know what I mean. I'm 6'2" and 200lbs and have the 16" seats. They are snug but I like the feel so far.

Hi Mike.
I am planning to use the Kirkey mounts (below). I don't have them here, but from memory, it seems the lowest hole is about 1" from the floor. There is room there to drill yet a lower hole I think.
My 'test' seat is 'sitting' in my office (ha), but I'm going to try the foam/cover this weekend to see how I like the 17".
I don't mind running some additional medium density foam under the cover for auto-X to take up a little wiggle room, but I don't want it too roomy. On the flip side, I don't want to have to lube up to get in them for street driving, and I'm certain to have offers to test drive my car from those with a few more lbs. (I'm working on a user-controllable rev limiter, like a valet switch).
Here are a couple pics of the cover plate. you can see how the back corner has the laminated over and under lap and the front corners do not, I'll use riv-nuts there just to keep it in place. It slides right up under the body and works well in my tests. The extra rivets on the ends are for appearance. The sandwiched plate extends about 1/4" beyond the rivets leaving the pocket to receive the footbox cut-out area.
The top right corner in this picture is the top left corner (while standing in the engine bay) of the footbox when installed.

That's a great solution Darren. I'll have to try something like that as well.

I can't tell from this pic, but did you use another layer under the riveted portion on the back side to allow some space for the footbox layer?
She looks tight
Yes, there are 3 layers. I didn't account for powder coat thickness so I need to drill out the rivets and put a slightly thicker aluminum layer between or bend the edges out a tad on the under side. It is a tight fit right now.

Darren that's pretty sweat. do you secure it to the footbox using a sheet metal screw?

Chris, Here is a picture of my old cover. I didn't realize I couldn't get to the last bolt until after I powdercoated everything. The corner held it very well and like Darren I sandwiched in a piece of aluminum in order to allow the cover to slip in. Not very pretty but you couldn't see it after the body was on.
