Comparing Speed Hut gauges to Autometer

I decieded to replace my Vintage Autometer Speedo with the new GPS Speedo from Speedhut. I was concerned with how it would look mixing the gauges. It's not exactly the same but pretty close. My speedo would have never worked because the drive gear is missing inside the tranny (new tranny ?) This made it an easy fix! Here's the finished product if anyone else is wondering. And by the way, It really works great!!!! It will tell you 1/4 mile and 0=60 times, time, compass, ODO, trip ODO! You guys that are getting the new gauges from Speedhut from FFR are really lucky. These are really superior!!!!!

Auto meter Tach

Speedhut Speedo

Hope this helps!

WOW! Very cool Speedo! I found this link, is there a specific one (reverse / 180mph) for the roadsters? (are these included with the FFR instrument package or an option?)

GPS Speedometers Gauge - Revolution 4in. GPS 120mph Speedometer

Would this solve the big problem the s10/mid-shift guys have? This looks superior to running anything else and not having to worry about re-gearing. based on tires or rear-end gears, PLUS offers all kinds of other information.

Quote:
Features included
•Odometer and Resettable trip
•5 Htz update for fast needle response and accuracy
•Display 0-60 Time and distance in feet.
•Display 1/4 mile time and speed.
•Show elevation
•Peak Recall max speed during run
•Current direction heading
•Accurate GPS Clock
•Current Speed in LCD
•Hot start satellite acquisition allows GPS speedo to function within 2-3 seconds of power up

Don't forget.... you can design your own meters right down to the color of the needle, the color and font on the dial, the background and numbers and the trim ring. There are also different sizes.

Here's the link to what I have... GPS reverse reading and 0 - 180

http://www.speedhut.com/custom_gauge...number-834.htm

And it's on SALE!!!!!

Can't answer what comes with the kit as of today as mine is a MK2.

I really like this idea.

What options did you select?
color? (black dial//white font (reverse white glow)?
font?
grahpic? (cobra)
bezel? legacy classic chrome?
pointer? white / glows white?

very cool find! thanks for sharing.

how do you like yours? would you change anything? (are the lights dim-able?)

Here is what I ordered right off the invoice. Plus I paid an additional $10 to delete the word "Legacy" to simplify the gauge and not make it more noticable that it's different. As long as you splice the lighting into the same wireing for the other gauges it does dim.

The only thing is that the color of the lighting is Bluish as compared to the white/yellow glow of the Autometers

Also the white of the printing on the Autometers is a more vibrant white, but you would really have to point these things out for someone to notice.

GL4-GPS-05-CCW
Legacy 4in. GPS 180mph Speedometer Cobra 427 (Counter Clockwise Rotation)
Black dial // White font(Reverse White Glow)
Font Style = Century
Graphics = NONE
Logo= Cobra
Pointer = White (Glows White)
Bezel = Legacy Classic Chrome

Also there is a small 1.5" X 1.5" GPS antenna you have to mount somewhere. Mounted mine right on top of the cowling above the instruments and the wire comes out of my defrost opening
Good luck
Good luck!
You won't be sorry!

Dennis

You can go even farther with customization. You can even design your own faces. Here is my friends set that he got made for his coupe.

How about the dash cutout size for the speedo is it the same?
My speedo cable lasts about a year.

I ordered a full set of gauges last week from Speehut - all imperial units except the speedo - asked for a reverse rotation 300 kph GPS speedo (a Canadian car) and their answer was "no problem". (They don't have that unit on their website). They also had a 15% discount for a 7 gauge set (I got 8) and then an additional 10% off "kit sale" even though what I ordered wasn't actually one of their kits. I'm very impressed with their customer service so far.

I was glad to see a review of the gauges and customer service. I have the Autometer PhantomII gauges but have not purchased the Tach or Speedo yet. Now I might just sell the AM stuff and go all one brand.

I ordered mine from Speedhut as well and had ZERO problems. Installation was easy, instructions were great and the customization is the best. Here's mine:

Just to add some more: The set I ordered has programmable shift lights built into the tach. Plus I made only one power connection - Speedhut gives you the power cables in a daisy chain design for easy hookup.

CCRsAC, Very Nice! what set is that? (can you provide the model #)

Shooter, which set did you order?
I was looking at the setup and it looks WAY easier than the Autometer.

So are there any downsides to this setup? (I'm sold!)
I still REALLY like the GPS, especially if you are considering the mid-shift mod, no mesing with the mechanical speed cable. I guess the only downside to that is mounting the little GPS receiver. (are there any other options to dash mounting it? could you mount it on the back of the mirror (or does it have to be flat?))

VERY cool find, thanks for sharing Mr. Goodwrench!

I purchased the Revolution style of gauges and still got the reverse direction speedo. I don't have a clue about the GPS speedo. My TKO tranny had the electronic pickup to the gauge.

Speedhut can do pretty much anything you want to do. Just call and talk to them. I had several emails back and forth with "Aaron" there. aaron@speedhut.com.

MPTech - they're the standard Speedhut Cobra gauges, but I substituted the clock for an oil temp gauge and then had them replace the FFR logo and the white curved stripe with the AC Cars logo. When you order them direct, you get to pick the day and night colors for the numbers and pointers (both the numbers and pointers on mine light-up white). Also, these have the speedo with no external reset buttons (comes with a short lead and micro-switch that will be mounted under the dash). I think the total for the set was $810.

I agree with the others who said that Speedhut's service is first-rate. Great people to work with and incredibly flexible.

Got it. I'm working up an ad for the classifieds now.

I will come out about even and will have better gauges. I don't see how I can go wrong.

mine arrived today.

7 gauge set
counterclockwise, GPS speedo.
These things are REALLY nice looking. They build a quality product (at least by looks, obviously don't have them installed yet).

Another thing that hasn't been discussed much is the fuel gauge. Where other gauges come with specific senders that must be used with that fuel gauge, Speedhut claims their gauge will work with any sender. So the stock sender that is attached to the in-tank fuel pump can all be used undisturbed. Assuming it works as advertised, you just click the button to calibrate the empty level, fill the tank, click the button again to calibrate the full level and - all done.

Just got an e-mail confirmation that mine shipped yesterday. I am also using the GPS speedo. As explained to me, the possible downside is occasional loss of signal to the gps. Most likely in parking garages, tunnels and possible in downtown areas of large cities (skyscrapers and overcast days can cause issues).

I could care less about occasional loss of speedo so this was no issue for me.

I deleted the "legacy" logo, have black face gauges with white font and pointers, chrome bezels, at night reverse glow with red pointers. I got the 7-gauge set with oil temp gauge rather than a clock (clock is included in the speedo anyway), the reverse reading GPS speedo and tachometer with integrated shift lights

I have the Cobra Classics from Speedhut and love them. I bought them before they had the GPS option but ordered a GPS speed sending unit from Hummingbird Electronics. Haven't road tested it but Speedhut Customer service says it should work fine. It does send the correct signal to the Speedo. My T-5 will also has the S-10 tailshaft mid-shift option to the GPS option was the best solution for me.

Tell me more about the Hummingbird speed sender. Couldn't find it on their website. Could it be used to interface with the EEC, and replace a Variable speed sensor?

Thanks!

gps speed sensor

Don't know if it will interface with the EEC but it'll work great with any electronic speedo. Here is the link to Humingbird Electronics. Thanks Alex (formerly EFNFAST)
