Well damn. So many of you guys now planning to do the same I see that I've let yet another business opportunity slip away. I should have bought a few cases of the Duplicolor for $6 a can, peeled the label, packaged up a can with a roll of masking tape, then sold "Street Performer Color Restoration Kits" for $49.95!

So much for that early retirement...

I'm sorry, but as a non-supporting vendor on this forum, you were SOL on that idea from the beginning.
Glad to hear others are getting decent results. I keep thinking I should do this and limp along until I motivate myself to give up the seats for a few weeks of reupholstering... Tough now that driving season is back!
Cheers, John

I'm so glad I saw this post. I just "painted" my purple seats with Duplicolor flat black fabric paint, it's like they're brand new again! I used blue tape around all the plastic parts and clear packing tape cut with an Xacto knife (be very careful, use feather touch) over the FFR logo. I even redid my Simpson harness pads (they faded to purple too). I haven't gone for a ride yet, but it seems to be totally colorfast.
Since Bill brought this back up...I've done about 400 miles since doing the dye job, a couple hundred of that in a white sweatshirt. Nothing coming off at this point.
"I didn't build it - I'm rebuilding it.." Mark III FFR4331 - Ford Crate 4.6 DOHC, Accel Gen 7 Engine Harness, Quality Roadsters A/C System, Power Cobra R Brakes with Hydroboost, Power Steering, 275X17/315X17, BMW Titanium Silver with HOK Brandywine Stripes, Intake, and Valve Covers.
Very nice! Did you spray the plastic seat belt hole guards with the Duplicolor spray as well? I look that black look on those! Is the dye on the plastic color fast too? Did you mask the vinyl or spray that too? I figure its good on vinyl too.
I sprayed everything. I just removed the seats, took them outside and went to work. I used 3 cans total. The paint seems to have stuck well to the plastic hole guards. The hole guards were showing some wear and sun fade before the paint job. The factory five logo has a different texture than the seat which makes it show up even when painted.
Really glad I found this thread....I have a set of Street Performer seats we'll be installing in the street legal Challenge car we're building. They have the same fade as described by everyone here, and now that six+ months have passed, I'm wondering how the reconditioning is holding up? Thanks!
Karen

Karen, I shot my seats in March and they still look like the day I did it. Very happy with the results. Those $4 cans of paint saved me big money on new seats.
anybody try this w/ the Kirkey seats? I have a pair of Kirkeys bought around the same time...one is still nice and black and the other is getting close to powder blue. The Kirkey "engineer" told me it wouldn't work, but I guess there's not much to lose.

Karen,
After 6 months and 3-4,000 miles I'd call it a success! Being unoccupied more often than not the passenger seat takes the most UV punishment, but even after a lot of time in the summer sun the resprayed color is about 95% intact. Just last week as I moved the belts for my wife to get in I noticed that there was a little bit of a darker "shadow" where the sub strap had been laying over the front of the bottom cushion. What little fade there is they are NOT trying to go back to purple; I'd just call it "less black" if that makes sense! I might give them a quick touch up over the winter, but it won't be extensive enough to remove them from the car this time.
As to concerns about the dye transferring to clothing---none. Never a trace even after getting caught in rain several times.
Overall a couple of hours and 10 or 15 bucks well spent

I pulled the offending cover off last night, vacuumed the big chunks out of the wrinkles, and sprayed it. I used gloss. I did light coats, and ended up using the whole can to cover the shoulder harness marks. The results are much better than I expected. It looks forty bazillion times better than it did. It's a little bit different "black" than the non-faded passenger seat, so I'll probably spray that one as well. No transfer to my clothes this AM either.
We'll see what the test of time holds, but so far I'm very impressed and happy w/ the $6.99 investment.
Bobby it looks like u did the seat belts as well, am I correct? My belts are turning purple as well and it kills me. I want to do something about it and this sounds like the trick.
