Fire Trailer to pull behind FFR4541

For some reason, although the weather is below minus 32 F (or C same temperature), I am thinking about some projects to get me through the next few months. This summer we would like to take the car on some longer runs and I would like to build a lite trailer to pull behind. I am thinking about trying to find some old body panels (perhaps) to make it match a little. I have lked at motor cycle trailers but think (not 100% sure but nearly) that I want to build a trailer where the trailer tires and car tires run in the same tracks (ie motorcycle trailers have a more narrow axle width).

If you hvae such a trailer can you post some pictures, also if you built it yourself and have some instructions you would share I would appreciate that.

I was thinking about a trailer for the Cobra at some point too. It'd be nice to drive down to LCS with a spare tire and the wifes luggage (with the Cobra instead of a chase vehicle).

I talked to Midwest Cobra & Classics in Toledo, OH about it once and they were looking at it from a new product perspective, but not sure where it went from there.

I had thought motorcycle trailer like from the GoldWing set since it would be designed to be as light as possible yet big enough to carry some essentials for the Cobra. Most of the ones I looked at though were kinda pricey for what I wanted; certianitly enough build quailty and functionality though.

In conjunction with this, I have often wondered about how trailer hitches are mounted on these cars. The (in my case) donor gas tank seems in the way, and there's not much meat to the frame members that far back on the chassis. I too would consider towing a light trailer, but the trailer hitch and possible hitch ground clearance issues have long held me back. Good luck in your pursuit.

Ditto on all the above. The fuel tank freaks me out. Anything added could puncture the tank in a rear accident or prevent the rear from folding and absorbing the impact. Good luck, I'll keep watching this one because it would be nice.

Rod,

That top shot of Brad's car and trailer was from VIR Nationals. That's my car next to his. The trailer was great, as it was about a 4-5 hour drive to VIR, we threw tents, and other camping gear in it.
Do a member search and email Brad, his memeber name, as stated above is Colonial Cobra.

At one time he was going to build them, but I know he has a number of projects going. He'd gladly answer any questions.

It's not the prettiest trailer in the world, but I built this trailer to pull behind my motorcycle for less than $300, using a frame from Harbor Freight and a Sears car top carrier. I reduced the width of the trailer frame to match the width of the Sears carrier..

Harbor Freight 48" trailer for MKII

I have a Harbor Freight 48" trailer with 12" tires which I set up to carry four race tires and tools. I had a heavy duty custom hitch made which bolts to the quick jack bolts. I used the trailer once to travel 150 miles to Lime Rock race track where I crashed the car. The trailer was smooth and stable at 65 mph. If anyone is interested, $300 with pick up in the Boston area or I could deliver within 50-75 miles. My cell # is 617 306 4393.

Here you can see where the hitch inserts into the box tube.



We test drove it with a 300lb tongue weight. but my trailer is closer to 80.

Tow's like a dream.

Hey Brad, thanks for the pictures they look very cool. I think I will copy your hitch idea, also like the trailer. Can you store anything under the canvas?

Only a few things like; a full set of race tires, a spare street tire, Jack, tool box, two pop up shelters, cooler.


The entire front is storage. The sides are 12" high and the floor is diamond plate. I just have to offset any weight in the front with thinks in the back to keep the tongue weight right.

I really like the idea of the trailers and hitches. I have thought about a small teardrop camper myself. Right we still stay in the tent.
