Fuel Cell

Just a heads-up to the builders here...

The fuel cell supports supplied by Mark are insufficient. The fuel cell needs to be fully supported across the bottom, and the flimsy little bent pieces of tin and pop rivets will not be enough. The fuel cell will weigh near a couple hundred pounds when full, and shock loads on bumps will be much higher. Try standing on those flimsy little pieces that come with the kit and see what happens!

I replaced them with some more substantial angle iron, and welded them in place. I also used 4 sections of the rear door gasket under the cell, and 8 - 8" long self-adhesive rubber strips vertically in the corners.



My battery box straps hit the fuel cell on the top rearward edge so I used some more rubber cushion there.

Interesting, mine didn't have any sheet metal. It had the tabs where I bolted aluminum angle. Must have been a design change along the way. Having said that, I'll definitely take a look at that again. One of the things I was going to add to mine was a top bar. There is nothing to keep the fuel tank from sliding up and down. Yeah, it's not likely to happen but I think I want my fuel tank bolted in all directions.

Hey Clint: I had the same fear about the tank "rising". I turned the top angle inward for containment.

Hey Bill: We didn't like the mounting either, and our interference was on the driver side, so we fabricated a 1/8" Stainless bracket for the driver side. The passenger side has a much shallower angle, but the driver side bracket is not as stout, and doesn't need the angle. We made the bracket 90 degrees.
