Trunk access

I can't find the trunk key. How can I get the Jetta trunk open without a key?

I'm not so lucky. My ignition key only goes in about 1/4" then stops hard. I tried lubing it but no change. I'm guessing the lock or trunk was changed at some point.

I looked inside and there's no release in there. Maybe under the liner?

I think the key should still go in, even if the lock has been changed, unless it is from a different series car. Is the car's electrical system still hooked up and functioning? I think you should have an electronic release on the drivers door. I am out of town until Thursday and I can't verify on my car. I don't believe there is any release cable. I could check my Bentley manual tonight if you want me to.

Could it be a valet key? I have two keys for my 2001 Jetta. One key is the switchblade style key which operates both the ignition and trunk and one regular key that only operates the ignition. The regular key also only goes into the trunk about 1/4".

Yep, that's the problem. I didn't get a switchblade key with this car. I do have a switch on the driver's door so I think I can hook up a battery and open it.

What's it going to take to get a new switchblade key for this thing?

You are going to need to get the key code so the dealer can make a new key. I don't know if they can copy valet key to switchblade key, but maybe they can get key code from the valet key. Then the dealer has to match the key to the car's immobilizer. Depending on dealer you are looking at $150-$200. If you don't have the key code, then dealer should be able to get it from the VIN, but that is a few more hoops to jump thru. The other issue, dealer is going to need the car to match key to immobilizer. Actually, if you know somebody who is good with a VCDS, (vagcom) they should be able to match key to immobilizer. I am not sure if anybody but dealer can cut a VW key or not, but I believe key blanks are available on fleabay, so maybe others can. Good luck
