Tilt column coatings

I have seen a chrome steering column in one of these and I assume someone had to gut the column to achieve this. Has anyone had any experience with this? Just curious how difficult/risky of a venture it would be because man it sure did look good!

You could have ordered it as an upgade when you placed your original order, it's on the order page on the FFR website. You can still get one, but it's pretty pricy to buy afterwards.

From the kit order page:

33648 – Tilt Steering Column Upgrade, Paintable – ($349)

33647 – Tilt Steering Column Upgrade, Chrome Plated ($449)

I wish this was an option back in the day. My steering wheel is NOT in a good place. I've moved the seat all around but there's only so much you can do with the pedals not moving much. I will either bit the bullet on the tilt or refab the column mount slightly.

I can't see NOT getting the tilt column at the upgrade price.

Paintable Column

I have a relevant question to the thread subject so I figure I will start here...

My paintable till column just arrived. It's brushed steel and looks fantastic! I really want to keep it this way but since it's real steel (not stainless) I presume rust is an issue. Ideally I'd like to put a clear protectant on it to keep the look. Since I'm only doing this one part I'm not sure the best option? Can I use a spray can clear coat? Will this be enough protection? Should I use gloss or matte to look like the metal? Cost is definitely a factor.

Thanks!

For the non tilt, could you unbolt the two mounts closest to the wheel and put an extension to lower the wheel a little? I think that would eliminate the need for the tilt and put it exactly where you want it. Of course, that would make it a little tighter getting in and out.

I used clear coat as well. Got some intended for clear coating wheels. It worked great.
