Koni shock alert

What's New

Official KONI Shock Recall Notice I wanted to take a moment to let you guys know about a potentially serious matter that requires your immediate attention.

Recently we received a report from a customer regarding a KONI shock absorber that had failed. This is the only incident of a broken KONI shock that we have received. We immediately obtained the part from the customer and forwarded it to the guys at KONI. It was quickly determined by the technical guys at KONI that the root cause of the failure was due to a cold weld. KONI and Factory Five Racing, Inc. are taking immediate action to replace any affected parts in the field.

The potentially affected shocks are in a small range of about 125 customers and were delivered in FFR kits and parts sales AFTER February 2010. We have identified the potentially affected lot numbers and are asking you to check your shocks for the following batch numbers:

Part Number: 30-1720, Date Code: 07-2010
Part Number: 30-1721, Date Code: 07-2010
Part Number: 30-1721, Date Code: 13-2010

True. The unused Koni shocks could be sold as spares???? If not recalled.

33 on jack stands

Three days ago my 33 was a roller. Now it sits on jack stands waiting for the new "koni's" to get here. I don't like going backwords.

Koni shocks

Has anyone been able to see the date code on the front shocks after everything has been assembled? I had to remove my rear shocks to see the code on them. The fronts look to be a pain in the ass to raise the collar enough to see the codes.I hate to have to remove them but if that is the only way I guess that's what I'll do. Any sugesstions? Thanks , Tom

found the sticker

Never mind, I found the front sticker. It is on the other end of the front shocks. Just take the load off them and loosen the adjusting collar. Slide the threaded sleve down and the sticker will be there. It starts to show up about 1/2" below the snap ring.

I ordered my Kit in March of 2010 with a delivery date in April 2010 and my fronts were 28-2009, but my rears (stickers only) are so damaged that I only THINK I can make out a _1 on the week code on one shock and _010 on the year of the other shock. Since I cant imagine 2 different build date shocks in the same box, if one is not on the recall I expect the other one to be as well.
Gonna get some Koni input with pics anyway.

Being frame 205 and cjmccall's 235 are somewhat close together in number but spread in terms of shock build dates I would image that a lot of these shocks are on Roadsters.

Edit: Koni agreed that the ones digit on my left rear shock was a 1 (defiantly not part of the recall) and that it would be very unlikely to have a pair of shocks shipped with different manufacture dates, so the right rear that is totally mangled probably is probably not part of the recall either.

Exclamation

Just submitted my info for the recall.

The confirmation screen says to remove your shock absorbers, send them in, and THEN they will mail you a new set. Realistically that means your car will be on blocks for 2-3 weeks (UPS ground both ways + processing time). Blahh...not exactly digging this process, I'd rather have the new set to install as I take out the old ones.

There was some mention of "expedited shipping", I might call and see what type of deal I can workout.

Cheers
Matt

Cool

My defective Konis were shipped and held by UPS until Koni came back to work after New Years. I received my replacements by UPS today.

Same part number, and the manufacturer date on the replacements is 13-2011. So, no they didn't need to go and make new ones to handle the recall (at least not for mine).
