Pictures?

Rumbles, for some reason the pictures that go along with your commentary about weather stripping didn't show up on the post I read. A URL was included on the email notification received, but I couldn't access them from the email either. Always nice to have your photos along with your verbiage.

[*]Emergency brake: Hmmm, I’m still working on this one. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Rumbles! I love the scallops and I am sure forum readers find all your Help useful. As Far as the E-brake boot I found that the FF supplied boot was made perfectly if it was inside out! the only problem was that the vinyl is white on the inside, What were they Thinking! I used the supplied piece as a pattern reversed and spent $20.00 at a upholstery local shop.

Tim,

Others have had the problem of not being able to see the PICs as well. Try refreshing your browser screen, that seems to fix the problem for most people.

It seems to be a bug in the system.

Bummer. I hate when I fall outside the "most people" category. Refreshed several times and still no pictures. I logged out and back in, but still no pictures. The anticipation is killing me.

I went to another PC, and was able to reproduce your problem (the images were not shown).

I refreshed it once and the PICs were still missing. However, after refreshing several times, the PICs appeared. Try that.

I think there is some sort of bug in the forum software.

Reference the pics, we have something that Rumbles is checking into to fix the problem. If it fixes stuff he can post it up here. No need to have everyone checking on settings that might not be a problem.

Hopefully we will have all the pics up soon.

Yup, I contacted Geoffav, and he engaged the ffcars.com forum tech support for help. I put all my PICs in album section this ffcars.com forum (User CP -> Albums). I sounds like there may not be allot of tech support for the that forum feature, so we may be out of luck.

I've been working on an alternative since Nov 2010. I've collected, edited, and reformatted all the content and PICs I've posted in this forum into a printable "Rumbles Build Journal.PDF document. Its over 100 pages long and contains 140+ illistrations.

Would any of you be interested in the "Rumbles Build Journal.PDF document?

Well heck yes I'd be interested. If you can email it that's great or however you plan to distribute it count me in.

I think you guys know that I have folders on my computer for every build I know about and any pic ever posted is probably in that archive. It comes in handy when something fails to make sense and I can call up numerous pics of how everyone else has handled that task.

Here is my info if you are emailing

geoffav AT live DOT com

Rumbles I think all of your stuff would fit in a FREE photobucket acct????
I hate to see any content lost from the section. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more assistance but you should feel free to contact Phil (username "administrator") if you really want to use the forum gallery for posting. In addition to being a car guy he is an expert on the forum software and would be more than happy to work with you. Between Phil and the company tech guys I think they could get it fixed. If you do contact him tell him I would make a great super moderator, I need a raise.

On this subject, I think many of us post on numerous boards and using photobucket or one of the MANY other image servers is more convenient. I typically take update posts here and copy them right into threads on other boards. It really saves a bunch of time. Otherwise I might use the gallery here too.

I forwarded the problem on the "administrator". I hope he can fix it.

I have over 140 PICs in the ffcars.com album. Lets see what the administrator can do before moving all those PICs and updating all the imbedded images in this thread.

I installed the PowerStop pads and rotors on all 4 corners today. I have just 2 words to describe them "Problem Solved"!

Even in the first few break-in hard stops, I was able to lock up the tires on dry pavement. That's a first!

The difference is dramatic. They feel like power brakes. It takes far less pedal pressure and the stopping power modulates well too.

That was the best $160 I ever spent.

Anyone coming to the Charlotte Autofair this weekend Aug 27 and 28?

I plan to be there and there are usually a number of other FFR owners there as well.

My Hot Rod will be showcased at the Whitby Motors FFR booth in the Turn 1 area.

I'll be working a car show with my car club, the East coast Cruisers near the score tower, so I'll be back and forth.

Had a great time at the Carlisle Kit Car Nationals in mid-May. I spoke in the main conference tent on "Build your kits car fast: 70 days from crate to cruise-in". Had a good size audience, considering the number of kit car attendees. I'm thinking about maybe recording a YouTube video once I get home.

I drove my '33 the 450 miles from Charlotte to Carlisle and back (900 total). That put me over the theshold into to 5000 mile club.

Sorry for the delay on this post. I've been hiking the A.T. for the past 3-4 weeks and just got back to civilization.

Won a top 5 award at the Charlotte AutoFair

My ’33 Hot Rod was chosen as a top five show car winner at the Sept 2012 Charlotte AutoFair. The judges included the AutoFair officials and SPEED channel host Mike Joy. Mike Joy hosts the Barrett-Jackson auctions on the SPEED channel. Oh, and on the far right is "Lug Nut". Lug Nut is the Charlotte Motor Speedway mascot

Jeff Whitby remarked “In the 15 years that I’ve attended the AutoFair, this is the first component car that has earned a top five award”.

The Charlotte AutoFair is touted as the “The world's largest auto extravaganza”. The 2,000 acre venue draws 100,000 spectators, 7,000 vendor spaces, 50 car clubs, a 2 day auto auction and thousands of show cars.

There are 2 AutoFairs each year. They are in April & Sept. Its a great show to attend if you are in the area. I'm lucky that its in my backyard.

Way to go Bill! Totally deserved. By the way, here's a word I invented when building any toy of this nature. "Funstration"- the fun you get out of a project no matter how frustrating it can be. However, from your detailed ppt, you look to eliminate that! Boooooo! haha. Just kidding.

A Hot Rod is never really done...

I've been a bit lax on my forum posts since I "finished" my build. The truth is that there is always something else you can do to tweak or enhance it. I have crossed the threshold where I spend more time diving it than working on it...Yey!

I'll be a bit more dilegent and add some post on my recent work.

I bought a set of tail pipes from another builder who didn't need them any more. They came complete with the original hangers that attach to the mid section of the tail pipe. However, there were no hangers for the aft section near the exit tips. Those hangers are very visible from the rear. I wasn't able to find a hanger that tucked the exit tips up close to body and looked good. I ended up making my own exhaust hanger from some rubber hose and aluminum.

The underside of my '33 is all mirror polished aluminum, so I wanted the tail pipes to look good as well. The pipes are stainless steel so I polished them up to a scuffed finish. The PIC shows the difference that a little elbow grease makes.

I used the same set of pipes. I cut off the hanger and made my own. I can't send a picture as the file is too big. If anyone knows how to reduce it's sise i can send it. I didn't need and hangers at the rear.

Shhhh!

The tail pipes were the first of many steps to quiet down my '33. The hard top echos all noises to the point, where I use ear plugs on long cruises.

The main source of noise is the exhaust. The tail pipes really didn't quiet things down much from the side exit pipes. They did mellow the harsh/raspy exhaust note and moved the sound further away from my left ear.

Previously I wall-papered the cabin with Dyna-Mat and sealed the doors with weatherstripping. This made a significant difference, but it was still noisy.

The body section behind the waterfall is also shaped like an echo chamber, and is the main source of noise. I insulated the waterfall panel with acoustic foam and Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV). I discovered MLV over in the GTM forum. MLV literally blocks the noise with its weight. I used the "1 lb" type that is 1/8" thick.

The MLV worked so well that I put it elsewhere:
 • Hung MLV in the doors between the glass and inner panel
 • Glued MLV to the bottom of my carpeted floor mats
 • Added MLV panels under the seats
 • Added MLV to the underside of the trans tunnel

At this point I felt like I was making some real progress, because tire noise became noticeable with the window open (couldn't hear it before).

I am now completely cocooned in Dyna-mat, MLV and acoustic foam. The next threshold was tackling noise leaks. Once you have blocked the noise coming thru the panels, noise leaks coming from every little opening between the panels becomes noticeable. The main problem was the door hinge opening in the rear door jams. I fabricated aluminum boxes that enclose the hinges in the space between the waterfall and side of the body. I also insulated the boxes with acoustic foam and MLV.

Next I went after the source of the noise...The "drown" of the see-thru mufflers. The drown is a combination of the engine RPM interacting at particular harmonic frequencies with the size/shape of the muffler. The drown was made worse by the tall gearing in my differential.

I started out with a 2.78 ratio. Combine that with the big rear tires and I would cruise at 75MPH @ 1800RPM! Last Fall I found a Cobra rear end with limited slip and a 3.55 ratio. That helped but the gearing was still a bit tall. A couple months ago, I swapped the ring & pinion gears to a 3.90 ratio. Now its just right and cruises at 60MPH @ 2000RPM. Even with the old 2.78 ratio, the performance was good except in overdrive. The 3.90 gear definitely adds to the fun factor and reduces the exhaust drown.

So what's the end result?
 • I spent $200-$300 on sound deadening materials
 • I added about 80lbs of sound deadening materials
 • It is quieter...Meaning it won't damage my hearing now, I can hear the radio, but it's not quiet enough to enjoy the radio.

I have a BMW Z1 which is a soft top and wrangler with a hard top. Neither of these are quiet on the road, I think with the modular roof and the roof being fairly thin, there is always going to be noise at speed!!

Radio needs to be turned well up when driving at 60mph, with both cars...

Congrats on the top 5 and we appreciate the noise reduction pics. I've got a bunch of dynamat materials ready to go.
