My friend Frank McKnight was a Mustang lover and really enjoyed hearing about all the Mach1 parts in my hot rod. I've had my helpers sign the access panel below and have a few more that need to sign. I was thinking about Frank today and decided it would be a huge honor to have him ride along with me.
I know Frank would have loved a ride in the hot rod. He had a tough life.
The tank is on the ground beside the house and the new Boyd Welding unit is in place. My wheels and tires are ready for pick up at the shop down the street and I'm making some progress on the alignment issues.
I'm pulling the cam covers off to do some work under there and they will be powder-coated while off the car.
The rear wheels don't look as wide with the tires mounted. The front tires are the wider of my two choices. I'm looking forward to dropping the body on to see if these work.
Sorry to hear about your friend Geoff. It's never easy, but even more difficult when some one is in thier prime. He'll have a smile ear to ear everytime you fire up the hot rod.

Tires and wheel look great!
Thanks George, I think it was harder knowing it was coming. We're going through the same thing with one of our young Scouts. We are almost too involved with day to day stuff with him. It's nice being able to have frank discussions with his parents, they are tough as nails. He never seems healthy enough to do things with the car club. While the doctors say we are near the end, they said that over a year ago.
I wish they made a 27" tall MT radial. I can always buy new tires and wheels,
Those wheels look great Geoff. Must be motivating!
Yep, plus I've been on sick leave the last few days. Progress is being made.
I seem to have a health issue that is still a mystery. Monday was the third occurrence of "something" that seems like shingles but is gone in about 36 hours. Yesterday it was a huge issue, today I'm able to cut the grass???? I did some ADDITIONAL tests today and I hope if they figure it out, it won't end my job. One of the downsides of being a pilot is you have to pass that physical twice a year.
Even with feeling bad Monday was a good day with the hot rod. I need to take some sick and leave days when I feel good and finish this car off.
I had a spare engine for the hot rod or my Mach1 that was a bit more modified than I desired. I've now sold the forged big bore stroker short block and retained everything else. I've decided to put the cams in the hot rod (Comp Cams stage 2 NA grind) along with the cam covers. I somehow ended up with another stock 03 Mach1 engine minus intake and accessories. It's got over 40K miles on it so I don't plan to tear it down.
I like the look with the new cam covers. Even with the black/polished coil covers, they seem to compliment each other.
so sorry to hear about your friend. and mysterious illnesses are rough, i know all about that story luckily youve got such labor of love and healing sitting in your garage and the wellness to get after it though!

looks great! LOVE the look on 15s with all that sidewall showing, just the way god intended it
so you think a 27" would be about ideal? im having a tough time with tires. wanting a modern hi-po compound and stiff sidewall for road racing but still keeping the hot rod look. im hoping to compromise with 16s but may have to move to 17s, really wanna avoid 18s... too bad those mickey thompsons go straight from 15 to 18, dang!

I compromised to 16" for the rears and couldn't find tires. My second compromise was a different 15" wheel and that worked. I hear good things about 27" tall tires from various sources. Terrible Terry for one.
I think the ride quality will be enhanced by the big sidewalls. I have a set of 17" wheels for performance driving, just need tires.
Thanks for the encouragement about my health issues. Most of the time I feel great and I have a fantastic doctor. Thankfully my "issue" will not take me out of the cockpit.
I've made progress switching to a hyd. clutch and made some changes to the cooling system. I'm experimenting with trimming the body and finished a few templates which I will play with when the body goes back on. The pics won't tell the story, this initial cut supports the templates.
One of the local racers had some bad luck financially and to help him out I had agreed to buy some of his MegaSquirt gear. It was such a mess I decided to help him finish building the ECU so it could be sold. As it turned out I sold his MS3 and my MS2. That left me with an unopened MS2 and I made enough to buy my coil drivers. I retained the parts to turn the MS2 into a full up MS3 but now I'll have to build another ECU. The last one took me 18 hours to build over 2 weeks, I'm just not fast at anything.
I'm preparing another set of cam covers for powder. The set on the car has one tiny chip but it bothers me. It could be fixed with a tiny dab of paint but I would know it's there.
I went a different way with my hyd clutch and I'm still working the bugs out of the setup. Too early for pics.
I'm still working on an idea to cover up or use the freaking hole for the clutch cable in the firewall. I could route wiring through it or mount my VIN plate over it???? I'll figure it out soon.
FYI, I found some pics in a forum depicting a Hyd Slave install that looked great. I made a bracket and assembled the same hardware over the last two days. Today I mounted it all up???
Well that was early this morning. As I was under the car looking at it, I decided I wanted to make some changes. I returned to the same thread and noticed if I had read on a few more posts the guy ditched his whole mounting system.
All of the parts were just laying here anyway and I didn't spend any money on this first attempt. Lesson learned, read the whole thread. The version 2 has been working for 5 years for the guy so I'm going to fab something nicer based on his experience.
Just finished looking through your build looks great cant wait to see more progress
Thanks, I've been doing a few things recently but can't seem to find the time to make big progress. I made a slave mount bracket that seems to be perfect but was ugly. In the next few days I'm going to finish up a less ugly one.
I'm using a 3/4" master which works fine on the car I first saw the setup on. After thinking on this some, that car did not have the Wilwood pedals and might have a significantly different ratio. Time will tell but I should have gone with a 1" MC.
Beautiful build you have going, looking forward to following your progress. I apologize if you answered this somewhere already, but what type of fuel line are you using (the grey hose)? I can quite make it out in the pics.
Thanks,
Lou

Jegs push loc fittings and hose. Available in many sizes and colors.
I have a use for those previously unused body tools now. Several of the holes need repair and obviously a paint job is in order. I know of a good shop just North of here that will do the restoration for $60. I'm still considering which way to go. A really good actual 33 tag goes for $125-200 so if I spend the $60 I'll have $90 dollars in it.
After looking at like new tags from that era I like the colors on the 32 the best. I'm not sure the DMV will be that picky about the colors, if we miss it by a year. Unless they change the rules, this will be my actual tag for the 33.
very cool - i love the original tags (and have a soft spot for alabama as my parents and brother live there )

have you had a chance to drop the body on with those tires? the more ive looked around the more the M/T Sportsman S/R seem like the way to go for 15" wheels, and i'm very interested in whether the 28x12 would fit out back... youve got the 3 link right?
I actually had the day off and planned to get some help putting the body on. It's been raining all day so that fell through. Perhaps this evening if I'm not helping with homework. I do have the 3-link.

Use POR15 CLeaner to get rid of the patina, will take it down to bare metal.

The restorer is the best solution for me. His work is awesome and relatively inexpensive.
Acid dip followed by repair with custom dies for the numbers and letters. Then the holes will be filled using a Dillon torch welder. The welds are ground smooth and the holes are re-drilled more accurately than was done by the prisoners. The last step is to repaint and letter it. All that for $60-80 bucks.
I figure it will be worth $150-225 at that point with a $90-110 investment. It was a better investment than the car.
I put the body on for a few minutes tonight. It was not fitting well around the firewall so more fitting will be needed. I also need to move the clutch reservoir I just mounted. Why can't this stuff work first try????? It was pretty easy for me and my son to get the body on with the front trimmed back nearly to the firewall. I'm looking forward to doing the body work.
First time working on the car this year. I've had a rough stretch at work but things have eased up some with some personnel changes. I'm in a new research group which will put me at the house working some over the next year. That will make it much easier to keep my hands on the car.
Based on some noise coming out of my Mach1 rear. I've decided to swap out the built 8.8 for a stock unit in the hot rod, so I'll go ahead and weld the tubes and banana bracket when I fix the Mach1 rearend based on seeing those tube weld plug photos. So glad I didn't tack the banana bracket on the current rear or cut off any other mounts. It's going into my Mach one. The HR will be better off with a 3.55 instead of the 4.30. I was going to use the banana bracket brace to keep from welding but that would have required a slight sheetmetal mod in the trunk. No need if I weld and then I can sell the brace to someone who needs it.
Did you move forward with having your plates restored? I'm anxious to see the outcome.
What a nightmare, the guy I planned to use is OLD and has been too sick to do it. He referred me to another guy who's work is questionable so I've been waiting for the old guy to pep up. Thanks for reminding me to call him again. I'll post up the finished pics.
I'm not really trying to set a record but tomorrow will be 4 years since my car arrived. Most of the work was done the first 6 months and I even had it in storage for over a year. While I never intended to rush the process I fully expected to be driving the thing by now. I've actually worked on swapping the rear out a few hours the last few days so maybe I'm getting back in the swing of things. Happy 4th birthday for my car and this reminds me every year that tomorrow is Wayne's birthday too.
